Manifold id
Hi I am Bob from New Hampshire and a newbie with a question. I put an olds 455 into my 83 Hurst and what a nightmare. It was supposed to be an easy swap which it was but it went downhill from there. I was told the engine came from a 72 Toronado but I am not sure it did. I am trying to indentify it from the intake manifold numbers. The numbers read as follows: D 2 398625 chgw. I was told it has an F block and E heads and has only 190 horses. The 2 barrel carb reads 7040159 and 0830RF2 and supposedly is the original. I would appreciate any help as I've had 4 different mechanics working on this and each one tells me something different. The one working on it now says when he gets it straightened out I'll be smoking the tires off my hurst but is that possible with only 190 horse? Thanks to Anyone who can help and hello to everyone in the forum. Bob
If you want smoke the tires get rid of the two barrel carb. Put a 4 barrel carb and edelbrock intake on the 455 and you will get a lot better performance. 190 horsepower sounds low for a 455 because I think the 1972 350 engine has like 180 horsepower.
Hi Thanks for your reply I put an Edelbrock 650 carb on it but I was told I need an Edelbrock manifold not an olds even though The plate was added. This all started in June of 2010 and still going on and I could write a mini novel on what's happened. By the way nice olds there and I am sure that moves quick.
The 1972 Toro motors were rated at either 225 or 250 HP, depending on whether they were single or dual exhaust.
That being said, as far as I know (and others may know more) the 1965 to '75 Toronados all came with Quadrajets only, so if your motor had an original 2bbl, it can't be from a Toro.
Your carb. number points to a 1970 350 or 455, and not to a 1972.
IF you have a 1970 2bbl 455, then it is a 10.25:1 motor (oil fill tube sticker code TY or TX), rated originally at 320 SAE gross HP and around 490 foot-pounds of torque. It would have a cam that was used on a wide variety of low and medium performance 455s (but not on high-revving 442s), and would see a significant performance improvement from the addition of a 4bbl.
I am a bit mystified and disturbed by your having written, "I was told it has an F block and E heads," as these numbers are about 1" tall and cast into the respective parts, and clearly visible to even the most casual observer. It makes me wonder whether you have paid any attention at all to this motor.
You need to get us the number on the pad on the left side of the block (as illustrated), so that we can tell you what year that block is from, and give you an idea of what motor you have.
You also need to get new "mechanics," as the ones you've got are obviously imbeciles.

An edelbrock 650 carb is going to be a bit small for a 455 engine. You usually see that size carb on a 350 engine. If you are looking for better performance you should go with a 750 carb for the 455 engine. You dont need an edelbrock intake to use the edelbrock carb. If you have any pictures of your car post them for us to see.
But still better than a 2-Jet.
... Or of your engine.
This thread is beginning to seem unrewarding. We need more information!

I am sorry but I was out of town and couldn't get to my car. The numbers i can see are as follows but not sure it's all of them 30M3209. I know nothing about engines only that i was tired of the 307 and wanted something to make my car move. I trusted a guy who said he could do it and was recommended by others who knew him. I'll try to find someone who may be able to see the nubers better and post them if I can. I really do appreciate all the help and apologize for being a numbskull about enigines. I'll try posting my pics again but it says the format is wrong. I have them as jpeg but for some reason they won't load. Again thanks and maybe this will turn out good after all. Bob
