1957 88 2Dr. Sedan... update 5/23/13!!!!

Bought it last Dec. and have been hunting parts for 6 months!! Too many missing to do a complete resto, so it will be a resto mod!!!! (I have a new flame suit) Pic's of how I bought it and where it is right now!!! I'm not doing anything to prevent a resto down the road. Lots of fun ahead!!! Yeah it was born "Sunset Glow" or "Pink"!!!!

Good luck with it and it seems like you found a very solid car. Not having to repair a lot of rot will save you a lot of time and money.

Hey 69442C, the body was solid, the floors have been covered over, (well, but not replaced right) I've por'ed them and am bed-line-ing them. I have the guts at the upholstery shop, simple, close to original stuff. Got the window stuff out and cleaned up, got new dr./pass windows and vent windows and felting for next week!!! Gas tank cleaned, douched and coated!!! Many more plans are under consideration!!!!

Nice car! NGA Bronco. I love '57s. Had one once myself.
I got an idea for you. Why don't you paint it "robin's egg" blue and paint #43 on the door? Make it a Richard Petty tribute car? Richard Petty started his racing carrer in a 57 Olds.
If you bring it to Daytona sometime you may be lucky enough to get "The King " to autograph it!
Just an Idea. Charlie.

HaHa!!! Thanks Charlie, that's a new suggestion!!! Having being born with that "Sunset Glow" color, I have had a lot of suggestions from the local folks!!!
Not sure the "King" would be excited about that 57' Olds though, I think NASCAR banned the "J2"!!!

Not only the J-2 , but all multiple carburation. As well as fuel injection and supercharging were banned for the 1959 season.
Only one four barrel carb was allowed. This is still the rule.
I heard for next season NASCAR will go to electronic fuel injection.

Hey Charlie, hate to tell you but they went to EFI this year!!! I think they should stay with carbs, but that's not politically correct!!! LOL Hell, I think they should have to race rigs off the showroom floor, but we're way past that!!!

My Bad!! That's what getting old will do to you. I knew they were changing to FI, I just wasn't sure if it was this year or next.
I think a "strictly stock" division of NASCAR is a great idea! Do like they do in the European Racing Sedan series that you see sometimes on Speedvision.
Pick cars at random from the assembly lines. Allow the race teams to gut the interiors (with the exception of the dash). Install rollcages, racing seat, harness, and other safety items such as a fuel cell, racing wheels and tires. And that's it!
What'ya think? Charlie

HaHa!! Thanks Eddie, that's quite a rebuild you have going!!!! This 57' is the oldest I've ever tried (probably won't try again!!!).

In the olden days there was a lot of room for trick ideas in NASCAR and the real crew chiefs and their mechanics had a lot of tricks, it's gotten pretty tight now and all done by computers. I remember a motor builder in the mid 70's showing me a oil scraper with fingers between the throws, that mounted between the oil pan and block and kept the oil in the pan and increased HP!!! I asked why he didn't patent it and he said that then everybody would know about it!!!!

Good luck with your rig!!!!

Thanks bronc, I remember a thing that they used to say about Smokey yunnich about him somehow hiding extra fuel in the car , something like the tech inspectors took the gas tank out etc and Smokey just drove the car out of the garage and on to the truck without the fuel tank lol. Turns out he was using some huge diameter fuel line that there was no rule about... stuff like that to me is just so cool making the best of what your given. Not cheating but pushing the envelope on the rules

Anyway, as I said love the look of the 57, and looking forward to watching her come together :-)

You are exactly right! The "strictly stock" series was started in 1949 one year after NASCAR was formed. As implied, everything was to be strictly stock. The cars were usually driven to the race track and driven home. (If they were in any condition to drive. )
This series was immensley popular in the 50's. So much so that it overshadowed the original "modified series".
It eventually morphed into the "grand national" series in the 60's, "Winston Cup" in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Then "Nextel Cup"and "Sprint Cup" of today.
I think that someone needs to put a "bug" in NASCAR's ear that if they want to stir up fan interest (which I'm sure they always do). That they might go back to their roots and re-introduce a "strictly stock" division . As I have outlined in my previous post.

HaHa!! Charlie, can't argue with what you said!!! I liked the "Winston" but they wanted us to quit smoking!!!!

On another note I got my front seats and front door panels Friday!! Then went to Road Atlanta to visit a friend that does Tech Inspection for IMSA!! Those pits are wild!!! Hit a local church car show Sat., took my "Stretched" trail rig Bronco, did not win a door prize, raffle prize nor a trophy!!!! That's the good that happened last week, I am now resting up for next week!!!!

Looks like they did a pretty nice job on the upholstery!
Nice choice on the black and white, that way you can go almost any color on the outside.

You make everything sound so exciting with your 45,000 exclamation points!!! But that tuck and roll interior is an awesome black/ white combo. Did the tuck and roll come from a preordered kit, or was it a custom job?

Thanks, that's a custom deal a local guy did for me, took him the seats and some pieces of panels, told him what I was doing and told him to have fun, he said how about black & white??? Told him to go for it!!

Just don't lift the hood. Just like me and my buddy (also Charlie) used to do when we took our "street stock" 75 Monte Carlo to Bithlo and New Smyrna back in the '90s.

You need to make it pink. I can remember my dad bringing one home just like that and a couple of years later I got to drive it to the prom. My date liked it, thought it was "cute".

An old Bronco with rag doors! Back when I was in high school I had a 1966 with soft doors and top. One of those rigs that I let get away and wish I had back again. Don't see them very often!

I'm glad you saved that 1957. Looks like it will be a nice car when your done.

Lots of memories for me in a 88 coupe... traded in my '53 88 for a red '57 88 in '65. Was my high school car for a year... my buddies named it The Impressor for it's ability to fry my recap street slicks!

Hi Bronko!! I've just purchased a '57 Super 88 also! Starting in on mine also. The "PEOPLE" before me did some seriously injurious alterations! 455" (terrible installation) engine. Had to be angled to the right 1 inch for the exhaust manifold to clear the steering gear. (etc). Anyway, am going to look @ your pics. Would love to keep in touch re: our progress. Thanks, and Good Luck!
