1965 442 Build

I am installing an Olds 455 and B&M auto-trans into my 1965 442. The engine has dyno'd at 475hp. The shop doing most of the heavy lifting says I need a new rear end, preferably 12-bolt and something in the range of Currie, Spohn, Strange, etc. These are running $3,800-$4,100.....and puts me way over budget. I'm not planning on racing except maybe a very occasional test and tune. It's primary role is cruising, car shows, etc. Any recommendations on complete rear-end?

Thanks

Bob

A 9inch ford rear is going to be much cheaper. There is a thread in the drivetrain section discussing this. You can get a housing and axel package from Quick Performance and buy a new or used center section with the gear of your choice. We also like pics, so please show us more of your car when you can.

With 475 hp and likely 500 lb-ft on tap, a Chevy 12-bolt should be perfectly adequate, especially one with the C-clips eliminated. This is likely the most cost effective and easiest way to go.

I would also agree with the 12 bolt. I am sitting around $2300 complete with everything I did...good used housing, Ford bearing ends, trz adjustable lower arm mounts, 35 spline axles, brakes, etc..all internal parts are Strange Engineeing.

Maybe check out the Strange S60 package?

If you’re just going to run radials, a decent rebuild of your rear should work just fine.
If you’re planning on hooking up with drag radials or slicks...then go with after market.

I second the Quick Performance 9”. I bought mine 10 years ago with a spool and 3.90 for less than 2k.
It’s bullet proof. A lot of bang for your buck. It’s been behind a 630hp 496 turning 10.75
