New car in stable

After delivering the Turquoise 1969 442 to Randy in Vancouver BC there was a great big empty space on the shop floor. Problem solved.

More details to follow. Just heading outside to unload it.

Car is out of the trailer and on the shop floor. Car has been dormant for a few years so I have a leaky Holley to address.

Real w-31 with original block trans and rear end. Intake and carb were replaced and oai was modified. Originally had 3.91s now 3.42s. Originally manual steering and disc brakes both now power. Headers on car too.

I am happy with what I got. It is a GM of Canada documented car with a so so 30 year old paint job. I will play with it this summer and then decide wether to return it to stock or not.

Car is Sherwood green with Galeoon gold stripes and black bucket seat interior.

Time to go change the old oil and swap the original 14" SS1 rims for 15" repos and new rubber.

Wink

Nice find in a cool color.

I was going to ask if you needed an original '70 W31 350/M21 for it, but then I saw your next post that it still has its original block and trans, which is obviously better for you.

Have fun with it!

I have known of this car for over a decade. The previous owner is the nephew of the 2nd owner who bought it in 1974. In between another uncle had the car & did most of the Day 2 mods in the early 1980s.

The car was actively for sale for the past three years. The previous owner spent too much time watchin Barrett-Jackson and was looking for that level of money. I have been actively dealing on the car since last fall & was finally able to negotiate a price that I was confirtible with.

pics later this eve.

issues

Yes that is a GTO spoiler.
Yes that is a lot of 70s stereo equipment.
Yes the grilles are black.
Yes the trunk lid key tumbler is out.
Yes there are some rust bubbles at the base of the passenger fender.

All can be corrected in due time.

I feel I got a nice car for the money I spent. The car scoots along too!

Yes sometime this year after I have the tuning down I will put some passes on her and see what she has. I predict 13.9 @ 100 mph the previous owner managed 14.1 @ 99 mph in Medicine Hat where on a typical Friday night track prep is poor and the corrected elevation is around 4000'

I can tell you for a fact that the stripes are not Galleon Gold - they were a different gold mix.

Congratulations, Dave. I hear ya on the missing stuff. I have a couple of manual steering boxes that will fit, but if you go to get judeged, I'm not your man. They are good, they work fine, but not the numbers the car calls for. I'm finishing up on a '72 442 small-block Olds 4-speed in Sequoia Green/ Gold stripes and Saddle buckets, so for a couple reasons, I digging your car. Can the paint be "cut and buffed"---in the pics it looks like there is enough product to give it a try---will make a WORLD of difference. I also like the wheels, while technically incorrect, they look pretty darn good. Great find and keep us posted on any changes and progress.

thoughts & thanks

Thanks for all the kind words. This W-31 is far from perfect but I like it. When I get a chance I am looking forward to taking & posting some pics of it along with my Radiant Green 4 speed 72 W-30.

I am unsure which direction to go with the car.....return to stock or leave modified. Perhaps even modify it a little further. I will play with it for the summer & decide in the fall.

I have a manual steering box for it along with the correct pitman arm. I also have a very nice pit free set of #1 & #4 exhaust manifolds. We all know the going prices for the correct intake & carb so those will have to wait.

There are a number of door dings & little dents in the car. I will get my paintless dent repair guy who owns a 1972 442 to work his magic on those.

The stripe contours are also incorrect. The passenger fender is a replacement 71-72 style fender. I will try to salvage the paint that is on the car with a cut & polish. If I decide to keep the car long term & repaint it I will use the correct fender & lose the GTO spoiler.

The previous owner added a tilt column from another car and I got the original with purchase. I also got a new package tray so I can rip out those 70s rear shelf speakers & replace the package tray when I remove all that 70s hi-fi under the dash.

In my inventory I have two 1970-72 Rallye Pacs. I would like to add those as well as a sport steering wheel as time allows.

The car's stance & ride height on the 14" origianl rims with owner installed 245 60 14s was brutal. I much prefer the ride height & stance of the car now. Those are 15 x 7s up front with 225 70 15s & 15 x 8s out back with 275 60 15s. Sure wish the car still had its' original 3.91 gears but for now the current 3.42s will suffice.

I hope to have it registered later today & have the carb swap done by Saturday so I can put a few miles on her.

Dave: Not to complain but I think you dropped the wrong car off at my home.

Imagine what it would run at sea level (Mission Dragways). ;^)

Thanks for posting this, as I see where the source of confusion is.

Check out this chart and see what color stripes were available with Galleon Gold.

GM of Canada has some issues with the designations in their database because the stripes are not Galleon Gold.

My 69W30 has gold stripes. THE GM Canada documentation calls the gold stripes "Topaz" in 1969.

Cheers,

Sam

Hey, Sam, how are you?

I can tell you that calling the stripe color Topaz is incorrect because gold was an available stripe color for the Topaz paint.

So that's two designations that GM of Canada is getting incorrect.

Dave: VERY NICE OLDS! Will follow whatever threads you do on CO, whether it's back to stock, or more modified. Did you add the third garage as a workshop, or did your home come that way? Looks like a really nice set up.

Beautiful car, Dave. I'd leave it modified, if it were up to me. I love the SS1 wheels on the car. Nice color combination as well.

The garage and shop are all one floor space. Local architectural guidelines mandated that they appear to be three garage doors. I divided the 2 singles from the wide shop door internally. The wide bay is 19 feet wide & 42' deep. The twin garage portion is 23' x 26.5' deep. There are car stackers on both sides with 14' ceilings. I call the twin doors area the garage & the big door the shop.
