Talking voltage regulator

I have 70 442 vert. I have noticed that there is no voltage regulator on the fire wall behind the air cleaner. I have seen many 70's with it and many with out. My 70 SX has one also. Is the 70's that i have seen be converted by the way upgrading to an altenator with internal regulator or was it an option in 70? When i drive it at night sometimes there is a light glow from the gen light and sometime there isn't. I have never had any charging problems.
