Is there a 70 to 72 U could registry?

FYI, Olds didn't use engine codes in the VIN until the 1972 model year. There is no such thing as a 1970 or 71 "U-code".

 

Yeah thats dumb, i knew that. Just about to put a 72 u code out to pasture so i thought if there was a registry at least someone could cross it off the list.

Yes ralph those are all 1972 designators for w-30, std trans 455, and auto trans 455 respectively

I am of the understanding that part of the 72 442 package's redefinition was that the engine size became independent of the model/package of the car.

Thus a 72 normal Cutlass could be ordered with a 455, and I believe this was not the case in previous years, as it was tied to the 442 model only.

 

That's correct about the 1972s, but the L-33 455 2 barrel was available in the Cutlass, Cutlass Supreme (with or without the Y-79 SX package) and Vista Cruisers in 1970 as well.

And for completeness, in 1971, the L32 455 4bbl motor was available in the Supreme (with Y79 SX package) and the Vista, but not in lesser Cutlii that year.

 

and to add, in 2015 the 455 4bbl could be installed in a 72 K code supreme at the owners request !!!!

 

So what gear ratios were available in the Ucode?

 

2.73 standard, 3.08 or 3.23 optional.

 

Were optional rear gear ratios shown on the window sticker in 72? If yes does anyone have an example of this that they can post?

 

They were an extra cost option, so yeah that would be on the window sticker.

 

I was wondering why there were two M40 columns.

 

Because the first one is the TH400 as used behind big blocks. The second one is really the TH375 used behind small blocks in the Vista and D88. Both were coded RPO M40.
