STEERING WHEELS AND COLUMNS

I have noticed some 3 spoke wheels on cars of my vintage....

My 75 88 Royale and 76 Toronado Brougham and Custom Cruiser all have similar 2 spoke wheels.

Was the 3 spoke on Toronados and 98s with Tilt & telescope? (telescope was only available on Toronado and 98)

My 3 all have tilt but none have telescope or 3 spoke wheels.

I really like the 3 spoke wheel and have a nice one from a Pontiac to swap into the wagon, not right but necessary.

I would love them in the other 2 cars but only if it was available... those 2 have like-new steering wheels, the wagon needs help.

The 3 spoke wheels you are speaking of are more reminiscent of the 60's and very early 70's cars. Most of the "fat" 3 spoke wheels I think you're referring to were on the Toro, 88 and 98 models. For some reason, in 71 Olds started making the (what I call a long center bar) wheel. The only variations of this that I've seen are the brushed aluminum finish on the 79-95 Toros.

You're right about the Tilt and Telescopic feature being offered only on the Toro and 98 - its the N37 option. Ironically, the Custom Cruiser (basically the 98 station wagon) is not offered with tilt and telescope feature. The rest of the A Bodies and Delta lines only offered the N33 option - tilt away column with Deluxe steering wheel.

I get the sense that you're looking for a 3 spoke wheel Olds wheel to put in the Custom cruiser? Something like this only in blue? Just out of curiosity, what's wrong with the existing wheel. I remember you had a post previously looking for a blue steering wheel, but can't remember for what car. Am I reading this right? Personally, I agree with you, the 3 spoke is an elegant wheel and I don't know why Olds didn't carry on this statement of luxury. I think the only way you're going to find one is to search the web, get lucky at a boneyard, or buy it from a resto shop (I know that's not a real option for you based on $$$$$$$$ alone)

I also wouldn't want a Poncho wheel in my Olds. You know, funny thing about that though. When I lived down in Dayton, I used to fly a lot up to Chicago, Minneapolis/St Paul and Denver. Seems like all the cabbies used to have a steering wheel from a Caddy in their Chev. And even funnier, it didn't matter to them what color it was. I thought it was funny!

yeah! that's the one I want, but in blue, so I gave up on Oldsmobile wheels and grabbed a Pontiac wheel off eBay and after having it acetoned (unbelievably filthy and grimy and sticky) but prior to having it dyed removed the Pontiac logo filled and re-routered a new hole and had one of my many Rocket emblems installed. It turned out really nice (before paint anyway) with the logo countersunk, it looks original. I really liked my 76 Seville wheel, but that's long gone. This should be ok for a daily driver.

No worse than the 76 Custom Cruiser that was in Hemmings a few months ago that had a Regency interior.

The existing wheel is cracked and missing the wood trim

BTW, I agree that's a really nice candidate for a wheel. Nice lines and symmetry.
