Shipping large items

Guys, in the near future I'm going to list some doors, heads, and other larger or heavy items. I'm new to this and am wondering what the best way is or who's the best company to use to ship these items. I'd read in some posts that Greyhound's out. It wasn't too clear whether FedEX or UPS could do the packaging as well as ship. I just want to be able to have all my ducks in a row before posting so I can be responsive and get the stuff sent out safe. Thx, mb

I've used Fastenal for large items. They ship store to store. You have to palletize your items and drop off at the store. Very reasonable on cost. I shipped a complete 455 from Texas to Washington for $230.

If it were me, I would not try to decide too much ahead of time. How you ship should depend on exactly what the item is and exactly where it’s going, and don’t assume that just because something is “large” or “heavy” that the routine shippers like Fedex and UPS can’t handle it. Both Fedex and UPS ship packages up to 150 lbs.

I’ve purchased a number of large and/or heavy things from rockauto and other sources, including wheel rims and a gas tank, the latter of which is certainly an awkwardly-shaped, large thing, and all were shipped by one of these standard shippers.

Large things like car doors will likely need a shipper like Fastenal, but not necessarily heads. Figure out the dimensions of whatever box you will ship them in will be, get the weight, and inquire with shippers.

Well over ten years ago, Brian Trick sent me an O type differential dock to dock with ABF freight. This week I sent a different O type differential to a fellow member from my local ABF dock to dock near Reno NV from north TX. $357…not cheap, but then again nothing is anymore.

Thanks for the responses. I wanted to have an idea on where to look into so folks aren't waiting too long on me figuring that out when it comes to it.
