Shifter problem

Shifter problem
I purchased a tribute 71 olds 442 with the Hurst slapstick shifter.
The shifter doesn't always allowed the car to be started in park have to move it to neutral position. Also the shifter has to be pulled passed the drive position to get it to go into drive then pushed back into the drive slot. Is there a different length cable for the hurst shifter then the original cable that was on the Olds Cutlass Supreme that the car was originally?
I have adjusted the cable underneath as far forward as possible to try and eliminate the park issue. this then caused the issue with the drive position.
Any advice good or bad will be appreciated.
Thanks

It can be a bit tricky to get the shifter adjusted perfectly. It took me many tires to get mine adjusted so Park and 1st would both engage properly. Put the shifter in 1st, adjust the linkage on the side of the transmission (loosen the nut/bolt), move the shifter ear so you can feel the pawl engage in the low gear notch, tighten the nut/bolt, then move the shifter to Park and check if you can remove the key. If not, loosen the nut/bolt and move the shifter ear a little bit, tighten, and try again. Keep repeating until you get both ends of the span adjusted correctly.
Note: If your shifter has a lot of slop, or if the backdrive linkage is loose, it may not be possible to get it adjusted correctly.
