Not an option, just considered an easy service feature. IIRC it came out w/ about 6 screws.
I had a 76 that had that same style dash pod. Installed a cutting edge (for the time) Alpine stereo. Equalizer mounted in center AC duct, head unit with razor blades glued around radio chassis (due to ease of serviceability), 2 sets of 2 way component speakers, electronic crossover & 2 amps. Killer for 1983ish at least!
GM went through a revelation in the early 1970s that having to crawl under the dash to change a bulb was a pretty stupid design. There was a lot of publicity about this "pull out" design for the dashboards. I suspect it had something to do with the Quasar TV "works in a drawer" advertising that was also popular at the time. Is anyone else here old enough to remember this? Yes, our family had one.
Wow that TV set was expensive! 599.95 in 1970-big bucks!
Yes, it was. Just like air-conditioning in automobiles at the time, a 25-inch console color TV in 1970 was definitely a luxury item. Adjusting for inflation, that $600 TV is equivalent to almost $4000 today. But now you can go out and buy a 65-inch flat screen, hi-def TV for less than $500, which is equivalent to about $75 in 1970. Electronics has truly advanced over the decades.
I have all but hired a hypnotist to help recall how you remove that pod but can’t come up with it. Don’t want to speculate & throw you off the trail but I recall it being simple. Examine closely or try to find GM service manual.
In a pinch bring it by a car audio shop & have them remove it, show you how & pay them probably $20
