Pulling a steering wheel

Happy Sunday allOnce again attempting something I've never done lol. My directional lever is broken and I'm pulling the steering wheel to access it and replace it. Sport wheel. Horn cap removed , horn contact assembly removed, nut removed. Service manual shows the use of a steering wheel puller which I don't own.(pic below) . Any other way to get this wheel off? Thanks

You will probably never get it off without a steering wheel puller. You can get a cheap one at Harbor Freight or you can probably borrow one from O"Reilly or Auto Zone.

I suspect the directional lever , the tilt column lever, and possibly the entire column on this car were transplanted as this is a tribute car and lots of stuff is from somewhere else. Also because the two levers have black rubber ends on them and from what I've looked at in the Fusick catalog the '70 has just chrome levers, no black ends. The directional lever has a cruise control button in the tip of it. When the lever broke off it exposed a wire that runs down into the column that I can only assume at one time went to the cruise control on this car or another. I have no other cruise control apparatus under the hood or anywhere else. I will not be replacing it with a cruise control option lever. Can I get away with just snipping this cruise control wiring right here at the column without affecting any other electrical components?

Oh, gawd, do NOT cut that wire. Cruise levers are sought after. The wire will pull up the column if you unscrew the turn signal switch from the housing and gently lift it up out of the way. The rubber tilt lever is Chevy.

Lol...The lever is broken Joe. That's why I'm into this column to begin with. Also I gave this wire a pretty good tug. It's connected somewhere down there and not coming out.

Is this white plastic turn signal mechanism all one piece that comes out by removing the three Phillips screws? Any cautions here like springs, small pieces etc when removing?

Unscrew the **** for the emergency flashers first, then remove those three screws. You'll obviously need to disconnect the harness at the base of the column. You have to "mold" the connector in line with the wires for it to slip up through the opening in the column. Attach a string to that connector before pulling it out to make it easier to reinstall it.
