There were 24 bids, from eight bidders, and the bidding pattern actually looks legitimate.

One guy swooped in at the last minute and got it for $25 more than the previous bid two seconds before the auction ended.

Holy cats!!! That may be the highest price for the simplest, smallest, originally cheapest 'auto part'. Geeze, I guess if you 'have to have them'.... what do you think the original cost to make them in the day was, 25 cents?

I still can't believe it. NOS 1970 fenders? Sure. Maybe even a sexy NOS 455 engine block. But not some stupid clips.

its crazy but... think if this was for a car that someone bought for 10k years ago, is now putting 50k -75k into a restoration and these are the last NOS parts they needed. And the car will be sold for 100K or even better an LS6 Chevelle for 250K, the return on investment for the cherry on top seems trivial - if you have the money in the first place that is. So its all relative.

for reference look at this, looks like this would fit almost any 1970 GM a body car without the map light.

Much less, maybe less than .01 each for manufacturing cost. It would seem these would be something the reproduction industry should go after.

That dual snorkel air cleaner was the rarest of the three used on the LS6 Chevelles and the L78 Camaro. Most were removed and tossed out. If you have a car that came with one, and you are restoring it, then you need those clips.

Not everyone in this hobby is middle class, many have a ton of disposable income. Its not a big deal to spend that much on clips.

Sure it is. If the high bidder had two brain cells, he could figure out that it would cost a fraction to get these reproduced professionally by somebody. Another case of more money than brains

Do you know how much the simplest tooling costs? And the market for those clips is small, the dual snorkel air cleaner wasnt used on many cars. I hate when parts like this sell for a bunch of money. Instead of investing time and money into clips the buyer will have original clips in his hands in 5 days. And he isnt going to lose and ounce of sleep after spending 1500 bucks on them.

This may be a dumb question but why do air cleaners have snorkels and not just open element air cleaners? Wouldn't open elements flow air better? Just asking.

Snorkels are sound deadeners - they reduce the sound of the air rushing into the carburetor.

In many cars of the era they are also connected to air diverters, so that they can draw hot air past the exhaust manifolds when it is cold out, for faster warmup and smoother running.

In newer cars, they are usually ducted to suck cooler air from beside the radiator, rather than hot air from inside the engine compartment, to improve combustion efficiency.
