Need some help decoding

Hi Guys, I'm looking for some help to decode my cowl tag, my block number, my heads, and my protect-o-plate

I already decoded the VIN which is 3J67K2M202827. From this I got:
1972 Olds Cutlass Supreme, 2 door, convertible, 350 engine, 4 bbl, from Lansing, with serial number 202827.

The cowl tag is:

ST 72 34267LAN427580 BDY
TR 977 65 A PNT
03E A 65

The block number (behind the water pump) is:

395558 2

The protecto plate has several numbers on it, besides the VIN, that I'm unsure of what they mean:

09-120
00011
05-16-72

Finally, I have a question about the heads:

They have a 7 on each one - but they also have a very small A next to the large 7. Are these "7" heads, or is there such as thing as "7A" heads?

Thanks for any help.

Here's the cowl tag:

ST 72 = style/model year = 1972

34267 = Oldsmobile (3 - GM division) Cutlass Supreme (42 - model series) convertible (67 - body type)

LAN = assembly plant = Lansing MI

427580 BDY = assembly plant body number (for internal plant use only; has no relationship to the VIN)

TR 977 = interior trim code/color = white

65 A PNT = lower and upper body paint/convertible/vinyl top colors = flame orange (65) with a white convertible top (A)

03E = time build code = March (03), fifth week of that month (E) 1972

A65 = option code = notch back bench seat (as I recall, "notch back" means it has a fold down center arm rest)

Someone else will have to chime in on the engine specs and the P-O-P. I'd say the date 5-16-72 means that is when the car was purchased by its first owner. And 09-120 is probably the dealer code. If the dealer name is mentioned anywhere in your literature, it would be good to match the two and provide it to this site as there are some people who are putting together a master list of dealers and their codes.

Hope this helps for starters!

#1. More specifically, the 09 is the zone and the 120 is the Dealer Number.
#2 Broadcast Codes The 00011 calls out options (and/or lack of them). Each digit means an option or combination of options, or "0" means none of the options in that "column". There are 5 columns. The meaning of each number should be found in the 1972 Assembly Manual. And where might that be found? I'm glad you asked. It is on Wild about Cars, of course!

Decoding

The 7A heads were normally year 72 with the A referencing hardened seats compatible with unleaded fuel.

Thanks Kurt.

Do you know where I can find out who dealer 120, in zone 9 was? I have not been able to find a source for this information. I did find a thread on this site listing a bunch of the dealers by the codes found on the protecto plates, but 09-120 was not one of them. Dammit.

Also, does the assembly manual have information to decode the block number that I got off the space right behind the water pump?

Thanks to all of you for your replies and assistance.

395558 2 is an Olds 350 block from 68-74. That info is also listed in the Tech section of this site too. The info is not in the Assembly Manual, although the AM does show you the different engine codes and how to identifiy the stamping pad numbers. The info about the various castings is on WAC in the tech section. http://wildaboutcarsonline.com/membe...ID_Chart_4.pdf
