Muncie id

Just bought this muncie from a fellow member and trying to figure out whst year it is. Course spline input with one ring should be m21. Please look at the casting and stamped, and let me know what year you think it is. Thanks brandon

That is kind of unusual, by the VIN derivative stamp it is from a 70 but the 660 housing is usually only used on 68-69 models and the 661 housing for 70 up. All of mine have always been that way as well as any others I have looked at.

But wouldnt sept 19th 1970 already be for the 1971 model year? My 1971 442 was built the third week of september 1970. Why would the vin on this trans be stamped for a 1970 so late in the year? Thanks brandon

I hate to break this to you: most Muncie transmissions are Frankensteined. If you're worried about having it 100% date coded, you'll have to do it yourself.

Looks like a well stamped P to me. If it was a B why are all of the letters/numbers clearly stamped?
The vin looks to be M183xxx and would make it 83K units from the start of production of the 70 model year. Production probably started in August,so that would be about right.

What is odd is the sequence is before my December built car. What do you think?
Evidently the trans date code doesn't match the vin date code does it? But it does. The way it works is,that's not the actual trans date code but the year model date code. I think this site tells us this. or at least the way I read it.

I don't believe the transmissions idled on the shelve for a year before they were used, that would not make economic sense. Every Muncie that have I built, and was original to the car, the trans assembly date matched the VIN sequence.
Well,if that true there's something wrong with this trans date code. As said it has a 71 year model date code but a 70 model year vin#. What you're saying is the Muncie ID site is wrong with their statement about how Muncie date coded the trans, right?

I'm not doubting your experiences but the above trans matches what the Muncie site says about date codes and the build date.

The shift arms have studs 66-69 and the 70 up arms bolted on. It looks like your trans has been modified from original.

I figured as much. Im going to have it rebuilt if it goes into my 442. I was just confused about the dates on the main case. I think it was originally built sept 19th 1969 for the 1970 model year, but muncie stamped them 0 because it was for the 70 model year. Any way to tell which midel car it came in?

Pretty sure it was from an A-Body because I don't think the big cars were available with a 4 speed. If the big cars were available with a 4 speed,it would have a longer tail housing like the earlier big cars.
