Interchangable Distributor?
Interchangable Distributor?
Are the distributors for the years 69-72 on a 350 block Cutlass S interchangable? Looking for a stock replacement. Bought a Pertronix 5yrs ago and it went out on me. Not looking to spend an enormous amount again on these high dollar brands. Having a hard time finding something simple like Duralast etc etc

Problem solved.
Welcome to the not a Pertronix fan club. I have one out of a 72 if you need it. As Gerald mentioned, you should be able to put the points/condenser back in your original distributor unless you bought the Pertronix distributor.
As noted, all 1964-90 Olds V8 distributors physically interchange. That doesn't mean that the can replace one another without some work. Each engine application has unique vacuum and mechanical advance curves built into the distributor. Installing one from a different application may or may not be close enough - of course any mods to the engine will change the optimum advance curves anyway. And be aware that the 1980s-vintage HEI distributors without a vacuum advance can will only work with the ECU, since the spark advance is computer controlled.
Or just put a new modem in the old distributor, not my choice because the new modem is potentially as bad as the old. I, too, have had bad results with Pertronix, but it would be a cheaper fast fix if you want to take a chance...Tedd
