how to remove 1966 hurst shifter handle

I posted in the transmission section, but so far no response, thought i'd repost here for more traffic.

1966 cutlass, factory HD 3spd, with the original hurst floor shifter.
I want to remove just the handle to make my new carpet install easier.

I'm hearing that these early shifters you could not remove the handles without removing the whole assembly from the trans, is that true?

here is a photo:

Thanks-

Ben,

Quoting from Hurst Tech site:OEM shifters used a "bayonet-style" stick held in place with two metal clips and rubber isolators on each side of the stick. To remove the stick, place or push a steel shim or feeler gauge down each side of stick, at the bottom where the chrome handle goes into the mechanism, and pull. Contact Hurst Technical Services for more information (818 483-1366 M-Fm 7am-7pm PST) if above maneuver is unsuccessful.
Good luck!

Ben,
Since you and Citcapp (Pat) live fairly close to each other, Bothell for you and Mill Creek for Pat, we ought to get together one of these nice weekends and look at each others Oldsmobiles, nice 66 by the way!

That would be cool.
Another friend of mine has the near twin of my car, a burgandy 66 442, and he just lives over in kenmore.
