Help decoding this car wanted.

Hi guys.

As I am searching for a 1970 Cutlass Supreme Convertible I have been looking at this car, and I would like to know more about it.

Chassis # 342670M298646

Engine code and cowl tag you can see in the pictures added.

I saw the add online and the pictures of the Cutlass looked nice, disapointed the discover that the pictures where taken 7 years or more ago. The seller exported it out of America to Denmark i 2007 and the pictures is the ones from the former american owner. Since the car has not been taken care of in the passing 6-7 year it appears now a bit tacky. But I am not scared off, if the price is right and a few other things have been cleared out, I would be ready to do a purchase. ( have to have my mechanic and body repair guy along to check it out. )

Pictures from the add and more info about the Cutlass in this thread
https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...can-steel.html

Thanks, Søren

As far as the engine goes
395558 is a 350. On the right hand front of the engine, right below the head, there is a little pad with a number stamped into it. If it is the original motor the stamp should read 30M******(the last six digits will be numbers matching your vin.
3=oldsmobile
0=1970
M=lansing, michigan
Hope this helps. The other numbers
TR 973= blue vinyl interior
03c=build date 03=april c=third week
25 c=body paint and top 25=astro blue c=blue convertible top.
This car sounds pretty cool! Post some pics!

Here are a few shot I took when I went to see it. I have to go and see it again. The previous owner gave this guy a new convertible top liner and a heater core for the compartment heater, neither has been changed, it has just been sitting on a shelf in his basement. So you can imagine that I am thinking: " How much maintenance has he done in 6 years...?"

The break down of cowl tag is close 3C 3= March

Looks to be pretty solid, very easy to work with the few issues it does have.
Nice find!

Thanks alot for the break down of the cowl tag, it is much appreciated.
@1970cs. I too think it is solid, my concerns is mostly about the two doors which both hit the frontfenders when opening, what seems to be masive bondo in one door and on a frontfender, chirps has been broken off. Has this car had one og more accidents?
This is something I have to look more into. I donŽt wanŽt to be standing with a whole lot more work when the day comes and I start breaking it down to give it a new paintjob.

A coat of paint can hide a multitude of sins.

Under paint you generally find all kinds of bad to rally bad work.

Just so you are prepared.

I'd look at hard to fix things like entire floor pan, body mounts, the frame itself, in corners especially.... rear frame rails....

Run a magnet over the suspect body filler parts.

You DON'T want to see this after taking fenders off:

The Cutlass has been repainted at some point. I believe it to be Azure blue when it went of the assembly line, but could very well be Astro blue now, the colorscheme taken in consideration. Thanks for you replies, I like getting more knowledge on the Cutlass.

Cheers

If this helps you this is my code 25 astro blue car.
Also looking at the bottom of the trunk lid, I don't think they sprayed that when repainting the car and the stickers appear to be factory.

The colour of you car looks very much like the original colour of the Cutlass I posted. It has "only" been repainted on the outside, not in the trunk or engine compartment. Nevertheless, I really like the colour

Well, went to see this Cutlass again, this time brought my mechanic friend along. The inperfections I had notice the first time was even worse than I had expected. ( might have been blinded by my love for this model ;-) It has had both rear quater panels replaced and the guy doing this has done a bad job, amongst not replacing the inner rear wheel wells which have been rusted through the sheet metal leaving holes in to the trunk compartment. And there are lots of bondo several places around the car. ItŽs a shame since it drove amazingly, perfect shifts, perfect torque curve and nice sound without any noices.
But at an asking prize of $26.500,- ( non negotiable ) I have to find something else. Besides this the car need overhauling as it hasnŽt been looked aften for 7 years. That is 7 year where NOTHING have been done to the car, you can imagine what state it is in.
I thank you very much for your help.

It is US american dollars

And though we have some of the highest prices on Cars in the World due to tax, it is still a cracy price.

For what you describe and the pics, that car might be worth a third of that....

I thought that was your money! In US dollars that's insane!
Heck you can find cars in the US for 60% of that and in better shape.

I know but when you sit on the other side of the atlantic ocean it is pretty far away to go look for a car
Not all, but some of the cars exportes to Europe is lijke this one, and there is no way you can tell from the picture and you have to rely on the seller to provide you with correct information. It is not easy.
