Gas tank leaking

Hello I put in a new gas tank on my 70 442 it has two vent lines that are leaking gas when I fill it up. The vent lines just have two rubber hoses coming off them as they go nowhere. I believe that is what my car called for. How can I stop gas from pouring out thanks

put the original tank back in?

Sounds like the new tank has incorrect baffling or whatever prevents liquid from coming out the vent tubes.

Almost as if an aftermarket part was poorly made and does not work right. I know, hard to believe.

Your vent hoses are routed upwards to the clip on the body, right? Is there a plastic 3-nipple joiner on 'em?

Even with the right vent set-up, mine will sometimes puke a little gas when the tank is very full. Never figured it out so I just got in the habit of only filling it to around 3/4 full to avoid the problem.

I didn't see any clip there . My old tank had a dent in it that's why I changed it and it had two vent lines that had the hoses on it going nowhere

Is there any plastic plug like fittings on the end of the hoses? They need to be higher than the tank.

I don't recall there being any plugs. Can I put a plug in both of them or will that effect the vent. I'll have to go under and see if I can get them above the tank

The plugs on the end would be little vent ports. Are they there or is it just open hose?

It's not a plug but a hollow "surge" device that should allow any fuel that burps up to go down the other side and keep debris out. Vents (with or without the surge cap)have to be higher than the tank and there should be a clip to hold it up there.

It needs to have cotton like stuffing in it.

The surge device should have the proper innards if it's like the one that Fusick has (part number GTF690K; see in Fusick on-line catalog at www.fusick.com). Fusick also has the gas tank vent hose bracket, part number VTLC680. Another potential source for a gas leak (this happened to me) is that the big o-ring for your sending unit did not seat properly. If that's the case, you'll have to drop your tank and carefully reinstall your sending unit.

Do yourself a favour and replace those lines while you're there. Putting old rubber over a new nipple is just begging for grief.

the item I showed a link to in post #2 has the stuffed vent hose end thingy on it. Other vendors also sell the thing, that was just a handy photo reference.

I am used to seeing the hose holding clip welded to the floor underside, up above the gas tank, on the way up over the diff. Maybe it is a screw-on item on your car?

Hopefully that thing properly installed will let you fill the tank OK.

If you don't have a clip I'm sure you can find a way to fabricate something to hold it up there.
