factory four speed in 70 cutlass?

hi everyone!!

i have a question. did oldsmobile put out a factory four speed with posi rear end and only a 350 2bbl in the 1970 cutlass 's' coupe? would this have been a special order? if so what type of transmission would they put in? im not educated on the four speeds as much.

thanks

Yes it could have been built by GM, but most likely special order. Dealers did not like to have cars on the lot that wouldnt sell. The 4spd manual trans would appeal to a lot fewer customers. The Muncie would be the trans used as far as I know in 1970.

Just to clarify, the four speed manual trans was available in any Cutlass and F-85 with a V8. It was not a "special order" in the sense that COPO cars were special order, but it was unlikely to be a dealer-ordered spec car. A buyer would have to have ordered it that way, but there was nothing "special" about it, just a matter of checking the correct box on the order sheet. No different than ordering a car with A/C or anti-spin axle.

3.23 was the "default" gear ratio for all wide-ratio M20 cars in 1972. Other ratios could be ordered though. The close-ratio M21 was also available in 1970-71, so other rear end gear combinations may have been more beneficial.

I did see it in person. IDK which tranny is in it. the car is practically on the ground not much room for inspection

>>do u think its worthy what he wants for it?

I didnt buy it

its exactly as he says taken off the road in the 80s and sat outside uncovered for the last 25 +- years.

its pretty much parts only unless you have deep pockets and absolutely love the car. rear frame was completely rotted away...the front seats were recovered at some point and look ok minus the 25 or so years of neglect !! plenty of rust on the car

he doesnt need to sell it and didnt really want move on the price.

Why do you think it is a Saginaw? If it is OE, it is a Muncie.

memories

Back in 1995 I purchased a 1972 Cutlass S parts car. It was radiant green with green interior just like my 72 W-30. This car was equipped with a 350 2bbl with M-20, 3.23 posi & a/c. I still have the transmission (date coded 1 month before my car) while the differential, shifter & linkage went into another 1972 W-30 4 speed car to get it rolling.

Oddly equiped cars are rare but they do come along once in a while. Not sure who would have ordered the car that way. It was way beyond restoring so parting it out was the way to go.
