That is the VIN derivative. All it will tell you is that this engine was born in an Oldsmobile (3) from the 1972 model year (2) from the Lansing, MI assembly plant (M). The last six digits are just the last six of the VIN.

If you have the vehicle the engine came out of, the fifth position of the VIN will be a letter which can be decoded to reveal which engine it was originally equipped with. Barring swaps, that is, which can be ruled out by matching the VIN derivative on the engine with the car's VIN.
