Dual point dist

Sorry to bring this ugly topic up again, but I found some more info about this dreaded subject. So my car 66 trac pack does in fact have a DUAL POINT DIST. no vacuum advance. The casting # goes to a GM 1966 olds dist part #. has the gm rotor & gm points with the 1/8 inch allen head to adj the points. I think what someone did was remove the breaker plate & replaced this with a dual point plate. question is has anyone heard of this ??? I am going to convert this back to a single point system just because its so easy to set etc. These engines do not rev high enough to need dual points. Why they did this when they rebuilt the engine is any ones guess. I can not reach the last owner to ask him.. THOUGHTS ??????

I do not think this will help much, because you will just see the 2 point sets and condenser. Everything else looks just like a GM dist. advance weights on top with real light weight springs, No one I know has ever seen anything like this before, I am in the auto repair business now for a long time and I know tons of gear heads !! This really is not a matter of life & death but I have OCD... LOL... I would just like to know..

Yes.

As you intimate, the only purpose of dual points is to increase dwell to allow better spark at high rpm. This is not needed with a relatively low-revving engine.

I read that a lot of racers ran the early 400 engines to 6000-6500 RPM. Would that not be high enough to warrant a dual point distributor?

Yes, that's where the benefits start.

Given the parts interchangeabilty of Delco distributors, it would not be difficult to install a Chevy dual point plate in an Olds distributor body.

We would like to see a picture of that dual point plate when you get to removing it. The only dual point plate for an Oldsmobile "window" distributor that I recall was the Mallory item which attached to the stock distributor point plate but it used the older style GM points not the allen head adjustable style. Pic of the Mallory plate attached.

this looks like what they did. I did not know there was a plate like this available. YOU BE THE MAN TY !!!!! SO I wonder if this plate would work with a single point set. I guess I am going to find out.

The Mallory plate attaches to the stock single point Oldsmobile plate so all you should have to do is remove it and use the original single point plate. Pic attached of the Mallory plate attached to the stock single point Oldsmobile plate.

Well sir you were 99.9% correct. this plate is a accel plate & they removed the shaft to remove the o.e.m plate to install this new accel dual point plate. I was able to remove both sets of points to install one set of points & condenser to the accel plate. The point set aligned with the dist cap window to set the dwell.. YOU LEARN SOMETHING NEW EVERY DAY... Thanks again..
