Drink holders

OK. I know cars from the ‘50’s didn’t have drink holders. But my need for liquid refreshment has only increased with age. I bought some of those flimsy gadgets that hang on the window ledge but they absolutely do not hold up to the Route 44 size drinks we are used to today. Anybody know of a good floor mounted drink holder that could possibly match the interior of my car. I found one at Cupholdersplus.com. But my wife was apoplectic when she saw the price was $109.97. On the other hand, it comes in a wide variety of colors. Ideas? Solutions?

I made one out of aluminum flat stock and an old AC drier. It sandwiches between the floor and console.
If you have a bench, go to the junkyard, and get one from a newer pickup that bolts to the bottom seat frame.

I picked up something off amazon, stapled some higher sides to it, and put velcro on the bottom and it worked for the Power Tour. May still have it.

Perhaps something like that could work. I don’t have a console only a wide center hump. I’m not very handing crafting metal things but I am pretty good with wood. Maybe I could come up with something like that.

I’ve been thinking about using Velcro on something too. I don’t plan on attending many car shows but when I do I don’t want the Velcro to show. So there’s that.

I find that my bladder is the limiting factor on "range", and drinks in the car just make that worse.

On long drives that's my excuse to stretch my legs and walk around every 45 minutes!

I picked up a drink holder for a console, it fits inside the compartment. You could prob modify one to go in most. Bad thin is You gotta keep the lid open while your using it. I bought it for our saturday morn cruise on Woodward with my kid, I’m waiting for her to spill coffee in the car.

I have yet to figure out why I would need a drink holder in my cars. I don't eat nor drink while I am driving. There are enough distractions on the roads as it is.

Well if you get into an accident, yiu at least got something to sip on while waiting for the police.

I saw a cop with a coffee in his hand, typing on his computer, steering the car with his knee. Lol
he needed a drink holder. Lmao

Drink Holder

For my 75 Delta Vert I made a nice wooden box out of pine and placed it in between the front seats. I cut the wood on the floor to mold (1/2 moon) around the tunnel. It fits nice and snug and doesn't move around at all. I cut out 4 nice size holes and glued drink holders inside them and took black interior rug and stapled it to the sides. I further added marine grade speakers for my radio to either side with a couple of small hinges on the top of the box where the drink holders are so I can open the box if needed. The last thing I did was screw a small plastic bread basket (painted) in between the drink holders for my wallet, cell phone, keys etc. whole thing cost me about $20. Lite a cigar, grab a drink, put the radio on and make one out of stuff we all probably have in our garages. Just my 2 cents. Enjoy your day.

I’m pretty handy with wood, too. This may be a great option. Thanks for the idea.

I finally did buy a drink holder for my car. The leather looking fabric on the holder came in a color that matches the upholstery very closely. It is quite small, but holds two big cups, no storage area, and has a bendable base that can be bent to conform to the transmission hump. I found it at - cupholdersplus.com. I can’t tell you what I paid for it because there is a chance my wife may see this post.

I'm looking for something that's a good fit over the console on my 70'. Sturdy but easily removed once I get to whatever show/cruise night I might be heading to.

I bought one from cupholders recently for my 55' super 88. I ordered the one that sits on the trans hump. Doesn't move, has a storage compartment, very pleased. Good variety of colors that matched my interior.

I've seen some nice hump huggers. I need something that'll ride an automatic console

I tried to copy the image but was unable to so here is the link. I had one similar to this in my 54 Olds and loved it. Not cheap. I think I paid about $115 for mine. Not only do you get a cupholder, but you also get storage which I used to carry my 9MM in.

55's cup holder
I bought similar, but it wouldn't set on a 72s hump, so I put velcro and side extenders on. It got tossed recently. Those without consoles have more room than those with.

On this topic I have to say the ultimate worst cup holder I've ever seen or had is the one I got in my 1994 Cutlass Supreme. It was a plastic piece of fold out garbage that popped out of the center console. Supposedly it slid open a bit to accommodate your cup size. Not that well, though. These things sucked. From day one when I bought the car new, I stuck my wallet under it so it wouldn't sag and/or break. Which it did anyway. I'm on my 3rd one.

By 1995 the console was changed, and 2 decent cup holders were built into the console. I think that's another reason my wife likes our 1996 CS better.

Yeah, it is ironic old cars had zero cup holders but some had 6 ash trays. I like our 2017 Dodge Challenger has 6 cup holders and zero ash trays, my how times have changed. Two cup holders in the console, one in each door and two in a console that flips down that is part of the center back seat. In my 70 Cutlass S with a bench seat, I use an after market soft console bag with a zippered top that has two built in cup holders. More storage is a bonus and the weight of the bag and contents makes no worries of the drinks spilling.

My two most sorta new cars that have cup holders that are worthless are the BMW z3 and the Miata both sports cars but designed so you can't use them. The Miata's is right in front of the shifter where you have difficulty getting to if there is a cup in the way, and the BMW holder is so far behind that you can't reach it without being double-jointed. Or outside the car. Seems all makes of cars have difficulty with our drinking habits...Tedd

Well this has turned into some conversation lol.

Does anyone have any good ideas for a 70' cutlass automatic with console?

Found one from the weasel at the NATS last weekend. A parts gal gave me a console with the lid broke off so the lid won’t be sticking up when crushing, Got a little work to do what I have in mind, plus my kid keeps putting her elbow on my nos one in there. It’s outta there. Lol

that’s what I have in my car. I carefully cut the cassette tape holders off. Cars with console take up a lot of room, leaving the cassette holders put the drink holder too fat under the dash

It’s not perfect, but better than nothing.

Nowadays I throw a bottle of water in the passenger footwell next to the pistol case and that's good enough.

I try to always take a fire extinguisher, spare parts and tools, and a large bore full size pistol, although the closest I came to pulling a gun on someone was a small bore little revolver. .357 magnum, though, that thing is mean for its size.

That type cup holder would be of interest to me as my console lid is not repairable. Where did you find it?
