Cutting a dash
Cutting a dash
I am considering customizing the dash in my 71 Cutlass as part of the restoration. My thoughts right now are to cut the radio buckets, inserting a filler panel and installing guages, a USB port and a Secret Audio display.
When I did my 70 Chevelle I searched long and hard for an un-cut dash to replace the one in my car. Back in the 80's everyone cut radio buckets to fit aftermarket stereos, at least in Chevelles.
My question... Did Cutlass dashes get cut? Before I carve up a solid dash should I look for another that is already damaged?

There is a vendor out of Kentucky that sells a housing that mounts under the dash where you can mount a stereo. It looks close to a factory 8 track and you do not have to cut up the dash. He sells on epay off and on.

Hey dsolomon: Go ahead cut your dash.
There's no problem with alterating your dashboard to fit you taste.
Take a walk on the wild side!
If everyone on this forum cut their dashboard, someone would start making reproductions. Start a trend!
Also the price of uncut dashboards would go up. Everybody wins!
Just tryin' to help!
(btw) My wife also gets P.O.d when I talk like this!

I have one (plastic part of dash 70-72 cutlass) with the radio slightly modified I would sell. It is black, I can take photos of anyone is interested.
It is a box, in the top of my shed not worth pulling out to take photos unless some one is interested.

Hi Dan
Here's one with the radio cut out. It's at a buddys house right now as he's pulling the pad off for his car. If you think the opening in the radio hole might work for you I'll get some closeups with measurements in the next few days. Send me a PM with your zip code if you'd like a price quote with shipping included. Also what color is your interior? These can be painted but I may have some other colors too.
Hamm36, why don't you post a picture of your dash too. Maybe one of us can provide Dan what he needs and save an uncut dash

Hi Dan
I'm not sure what you finally decided to do, but here's some pictures of the dash out of the car. I'd like to keep the wiper bezel, ash tray and light delete panels, but after that I'd take $10 plus shipping if it would help you decide to not cut your dash. Let me know what you think. John
