Brake swap question

Would I be able to swap the disc brake setup from a '74 Chevelle onto my '69 442?

Sorry but no they won't interchange. It would have to be from an A-body 1972 or older to fit. Joe P. wrote a real nice post discussing this conversion. You might try the search option to locate it. John

Here's your donor car list with disc brakes.
BUICK- 69-72 CENTURY, REGAL, SKYLARK, SPECIAL, GS
CHEVROLET- 69 CAMARO,
69-72 CHEVELLE, EL CAMINO, MALIBU
69-74 CHEY II, NOVA, CONCOURS
OLDS- 69-72 CUTLASS, F85, 442, VISTA CRUISER
73-74 OMEGA
PONTIAC- 69 FIREBIRD
69-72 GRAND PRIX, GTO, LEMANS, TEMPEST, GRAND AM
71-74 PHOENIX, VENTURA
GMC-69-74 SPRINT, CABALLERO

If you do this yourself you will save a lot and it's easy. All these cars have what you need to swap out the fronts. Be sure to get the spindles , rotors, calipers, backplates, master cyl., porporsioning valve and steel lines. Replace rubber hoses with new.

Nice List! I've also heard that the early camaro's and firebirds (not sure which years) would work if you switched the spindles, right on left and left on right, due to those cars having the steering attached to the rear of the spindles rather than the front. John

Wow, thank you so much guys! I have a chance to get the brakes off a '74 Chevelle but I wanted to make sure I wasn't going to waste time and $$$. Thanks again!

If you haven't created a parts wanted thread yet you might give that a try. Also include your city/state or closest big city so others will know if your close enough to pick up parts or if they'll need to ship them. John

You can swap the '74 disc to your car.
BUT, you need a lower ball joint and you need to reem the spindle on top or a ball joint, also the outer tie rod ends. Where the upper "A" arm mounts, you need a ton of shims, because the spindle is taller.
So in short a whole lot of work.
Better to find a doner car off the list above or get the "Scarebird" kit. Check E-bay, they are there all the time.

Good Luck,

Gene
