Axle code help...

My axle code reads T G F 355 in my 1985 442...the only reference I can find is for the 3.42 gear. 11 41 is stamped on the ring gear which is a 3.73 gear....my question is what is the TGF code referring to ?...I know G is General Motors.

Thanks for any input
Ted

84-87 G body axle codes

I have owned two 85, three 86 & two 87 442s. I pulled the 8.5" diff from every one of them. Both 85 442s had 8TF stamped on the axle tube. The 86 models were all stamped 2TG and both 87 442s had 3TG axle code stamps. My only 84 HO had a 6TF stamp on the axle code.

Are you sure that you don't have a GN or Turbo T differential with swapped 3.73 gears under your 442?

It is a 3.73 gear non posi .....was this something the dealers ordered ? I always thought these cars came stock with a 3.42 gear.
Dave, thanks....as far as I can tell, the diff cover has never been off and the original owner never had the axle or gears changed....
So the GN Diff and a 3.73 gear and a TGF axle code...and non posi? Strange.....
