70 W-30 Maybe.

I have it on very good authority by one of the best on these cars that I may have found one.
Would you believe that with the correct OW trans with the VIN matching numbers that this car is a W?
The heads are wrong, the carburetor is wrong, the car is the wrong color, yada yada...Trans is correct.

For me, a real W30 (66-72) is all about the engine. It along with its correct components is all that really matters... With that said I am not voting, because I fall flatly between yes and no on your poll.

If you can substantiate that it came from the factory as a W-30 then that's what it is, altered engine notwithstanding. If that is the numbers-matching OW transmission (and you feel confident it hasn't been re-tagged via E-Bay) then knock yourself out. If any doubt remains, you might also want to do a checklist of W-30 specific equipment so you can sleep better at night.

Of course if it comes with some paperwork, that would make it that much easier.

From what I’ve read matching numbers OW transmission is the only way to verify without paperwork. Of course you would have to really scrutinize the tag and the vin stamp. Even then it won’t be 100% because it could still be faked.

Keep in mind that you can buy these on the interwebs...

Of course, it's usually pretty obvious if the tag is brand new or has been there since the trans was born. Just be careful.

Joe, the OW tag has a black rivet like it should and the last 6 numbers of the VIN are stamped on the driver side rail like it should.
I think it may be a real W car. I have pics but there're in text form on my smart phone and I'm to dumb to figure out how to post them.

I'm not suggesting that it isn't real, just pointing out that it is possible for someone to add an OW tag to a "numbers matching" trans.

Thanks, I knew that they were reproduced. I wouldn't think someone cloning one would know about the black rivet
or the VIN on the rail either. I had to get the man selling it to put it on a lift and get some brake cleaner to find the stamp.
He didn't even know about that one. I feel I found one. Built like I wanted too, with the spoiler, dual-gate and /A/C.

Yes if it has the Numbers matching OW trans its a W30 period. Not having the engine stuff just makes it cheaper to buy hopefully.

Nice color though.
Any chalk underhood anywhere, emission tune decal look authentic ?
All those important things like distr , carb, stamping numbers relate?
Suspension, spring tags or markings for any correct options? Boxed arms, shock numbers etc , probably not all original stuff after these many years.
Which cars did and didn't have bleeders on the master cyl?
All fun stuff to go through , must be a thick book on this somewhere.

It's sat for 22 years, I believe it to be a survivor car with 73 thousand miles. The fellow I got it from just bought it to flip it, the original owner had passed several years ago.

Not sure I'd call that a survivor. Cool W-30.

I think that's the real thing, or it was made to look that way so long ago there was no money in doing so, yet.

The state of the engine bay authenticates it. I'd clean it up, get it reliable, and go terrorize the neighborhood.

Tru-blue 442, were you given any explanation as to why a 73 thousand mile car has so much changed on it ?

Did the flipper buy it from the family/estate of the original owner ? (I don't see an original owner changing a car of this magnitudes color...)

Does she ping ?

Maybe engines heads were swapped to work with todays poor gas quality ?

The carburetor swap is the only move that makes immediate sense to me.

Your cylinder heads have the casting # for a 1970 442 W-30 automatic/manual. Looks like you got the real thing.

Thanks Andy. It's far from perfect but it is the one I have wanted since I drove one at a used car dealership when I was 17 or so and didn't have the $1895.00 at the time!

Personally, IMHO, perfect cars are way over rated..mine is far from perfect, but sure as hell is fun to run thru the gears. Brings me right back to 17 years old

The 200 miles home was a fun ride, ran about 200* all the way home. Looking at it today and noticed it had an aftermarket trans cooler in front of the a/c condenser
.
