69 442 Console Removal
#3
No need to split the console. No need to remove the shifter.
The console will come out as one unit. Refer to the lower right picture.
Remove the two lower forward screws and the 4 screws in the storage compartment. You may need to remove the shift cable I don't remember that part. Again look at how the factory did it,
Remove the shift ball. Drive out the roll pin pinning the "T" and the "T" will come off allowing you to lift the console off. No need to remove the control panel asm.
Pay attention to how the carpet is trimmed around the floor brackets and shifter and duplicate it. It needs to be cut tight or you will see gaps upon installation.
Now is a good time to clean and lube the shift mechanism and the reverse light switch. Check the adjustment on the reverse light switch adjust accordingly.

I can't overemphasize what droldsmorland said about paying attention to how the carpet is trimmed around the floor brackets and shifter. It took me two tries to get it right!

Once the console is out, I’d suggest removing the NSS from the shifter. It’s very easy to break, and kinda expensive to replace. I would agree, clean it and degrease it and the shifter. The 50 plus year old grease has probably long ago dried out.
