It sounds a little pricey for me. He doesn't say if he has the original front clip for it. Doesn't look like the bumpers are there. The damage to the rear is going to take a lot of work.
Its going to take a lot of money to bring it back. $10,000 to buy, another 10 or 15 to bring it back, now $25,000 to have a non numbers car worth maybe $25,000. in my opinion.

That car's going to need a lot more than 15k to even get it presentable. Unless someone can get it for 2-3k, leave it be....

 

A little off topic, but does anyone know how many of the original 515 are still around?

 

See this is what i like about this site, someone sees a possibile opportunity for a car they are either not interested in or isn't sure is worth it, posts th info and others chime in. I for one think this would have to be your dream car to pay even 5k for it. In the Chicago market you are looking at 40 - 50k to get it presentable and you still need an engine and trans. That's a lot of dough to invest in a car. But if you have the money or the time well.... But after going through a restoration myself recently I'd suggest starting with a better car to begin with.

At least the seller isn't sugar coating anything. It is a rare car that needs a total redo - it just doesn't have the market value of other brands (i.e. The Judge we were chatting about recently)

 

Wow, that's an expensive trim plate! Seller says it was parted out, and given the crappy pictures there is very little or nothing left h/o except for the trim plate. We have discussed this scenario on my favorite model A site, when is a vehicle no longer what it once was. What is you guys take on when it is no longer what it once was? For me, this is no longer a h/o, and the seller is grasping for straws.

 

It is still an H/O as the tags and body are the car. it will never be a matching number car again without the original engine and trans but that does not mean it is not what it was built as. The 68 Hemi Charger that was built on "chop, cut, rebuild" is a different story. the body for the Charger was rebuilt down the road from me. the only part of the car that is original sheetmetal is part of the firewall and the front frame rails. every other part (rockers, floor, roof, rear frame rails, trunk floor, quarters, doors, fenders and all the inner structure) was replaced with new or donor parts. If less than 10% of the orginal steel is there I dont think you can still call it the original car. most of this car is still there so it would still be a 68 H/O but would have a limited value without the drivetrain.
I have fixed worse but for me the price would have to come down alot.

 

EXACTLY! You know someone will pay $15k for this car, $7k for a nice, clean Cutlass S, $15 for the correct rivets for the vin and data tags, some Peruvian Silver and Black paint, 'presto change o' - Nice '68 H/O!

 

The car is basically a shell. I know someone that looked at it a while ago. Being in Johnson City, NY I'd say there's a good chance it's been flooded a couple of times. The Susquehanna river runs through there and it floods badly every twenty years or so. The last time was 2011. Non matching 68 H/O's are selling for around $45k. I'd say it would be tough to bring that one back for that much never mind the initial investment. I'm only about an hour and a half away.

 

Interesting, the body doesn't make it a h/o, only the trim plate, without that it is just a cutlass. All other h/o specific parts are long gone, if you removed the trim plate and crushed the body, you are still only left with the plate, the only thing that is h/o left on the car. I will still view it as no longer a H/O, this would be what I would consider a tribute car, if restored, a swap meet special, if you will.

This body shell and tag are the units that went to and sat in the Demmer Engineering building to be modified and turned into 1 of the 515- 68 Hurst Olds.

 

The trim plate isn't just what makes it an H/O. The VIN is documented. That's what makes it legit. From what I understand the body on this car isn't in bad shape so it probably wouldn't have to be re-bodied.

 

I love 68 H/O 's , but anyone would be nuts to buy that thing ! There doesn't seem to be much left .

That H/O has been posted on eBay a few times and had some bids. I thought it sold at one time, I guess not....

 

Why? Z is the correct Peruvian Silver Poly paint code for a 1968 H/O. The 68 H/O was the only Cutlass body to get this otherwise Toro-only color, so it is a real H/O, which I believe was the seller's point.

 

I did go back and refresh my memory to vin and trim tags, you guys are correct, not that I thought you were wrong, I was looking at it wrong. Is a shame it is in this condition, but could be brought back, at least the roof is still there....
