There was a day when no aftermarket rods could be had. Stock rods were heat treated, shot peened, and side seams ground for strength. Magnafluxing insured there were no hairline cracks. All of this made for a reliable rod. Sammy worked miracles with this car...awesome 442 it is. He drives it well and hard too!
That's the "old school" way. I bought into Joe Mondello's way back when he was the main guru. My 1967 98 has Mondello oil restricters, rods are shot peened and smoothed and notched. I've had one main bearing problem (didn't spin but worn) due to block flex JMO. Near 5000 lbs launches are hard but nothing compared to 7000 rpms sidestep the clutch, brutal launches. According to the latest Olds Guru's book, factory rods are "rubber bands" and all of Joe Mondello's oiling tricks unnecessary. Go figure. From what the latest guru says, I hold my breath every time I start an Oldsmobile because I'm waiting for a rod to come out thru the pan.

I hear ya, went down the old school route myself many years ago with a 425 but it did stay together and the latest story ... yes mods are un-necessary... so who to believe?? Don't know.
Question to Joe Mondello. "Do Oldsmobiles have an oiling problem?" Answer from Joe yelling into phone, "F@$&ING A, THEY GOT AN OILING PROBLEM", buy my book! I bought the book. Here's pictures of my 98's oil pan. Milodon pans need a "little" modification because of rear steering.
