There were some 6 volt positive ground systems on some other brands, but I suspect that yours is a negative ground. I have an old Motor's Auto Repair Manual that covers from 1940-1955. While it doesn't directly show the system polarity, it says that all the regulators are negative grounded. My 1955 Olds is a negative ground system, hence I suspect that yours is also.

X2 on the above from Ozzie. A friend had a 40 and I helped him work on it regularly and I don't remember it being a positive ground....Tedd

Back in the day, Ford's had a positive ground. I suspect that changed in 54 when they went to the ohv engine but might have continued until they went to 12 volts in 1956. All the flatheads were positive ground. I don't think GM ever was but don't know for sure.
