Hello,
I hope someone could shed some light on an issue I created when removing my gas gauge.
First off, I removed my gas gauge to access the wiper switch. While trying to be careful removing the harness off the back of the gauge, the 2 pins on the side that the temperature light is one stayed in the harness (broke off at the base of the pin). These 2 pins are kind of spaced away from the rest in the row. Has anyone tried to solder these back on, or would that cause me more issues?
My car is a 1971 Cutlass Convertible with the dummy lights in the gas gauge cluster.

You can solder them back on, it's a pain but should work if you are good at soldering. There are other ways to fix it. My advice would be to just get another pod. They are cheap, and they are plentiful. You could swap the circuit board if yours has a better face.

 

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking that soldering looks like a real PIA and was not sure if I would melt something. I was thinking about finding another gauge pod and either use it, or swap parts to make mine work. I will put a post out for a replacement pod.

 

Sure, it's a pita job to solder. Look at the thread at the bottom of the page about reinforcing the pins with screws inside. If it was a real gauge pod, they are hard to come by. Peeps here have boxes of them.

I like the idea of using the screws. I think I may give it a try and see what happens. Sounds like it would more sturdy that just using solder by itself. Thanks guys for re-sharing that tip.

 

Just to update everyone, I found some mini standard screws at the Hardware store that finally worked. I was able to thread them carefully through the back of the circuit board and into about just a little over have of the broken terminals. I tested for continuity and that checked out ok. I will not be hook up to car until I get the wiper switch reinstalled. Thanks again for all the knowledge and helpfulness of this forum.
