Trouble code 24 - Vehicle Speed Sensor?

So - I have a 1985 Olds Custom Cruiser. 307 V8. I bought it around 2 weeks ago, and since then I've done a lot of maintenance. The car runs great, sounds great, and feels great. Yet, whether I'm going up hill, down hill, or on flat road, as soon as I pass 45-55 MPH my check engine light comes on. I've jumpered the connector under the dash about three times, and all three times it flashes a trouble code 24 - the vehicle speed sensor.

I have a couple questions -

1. What exactly does the sensor control? I know on newer cars that's in charge of when the tranny shifts and various other fuel economy and engine functions, but what exactly does it control in an 85 Oldsmobile with the CCC computer?

2. Where is it located? I have no problem changing it, I just cannot figure out if it's in the cluster or on the bottom on the tranny or what.

3. And finally - Where can I get a replacement? I've called a couple shops and they tell me the part is obsolete. I don't need an exact GM stock part, just something that will work.

Lastly, I am new to these 80's American made land yachts. Hoping to learn what I can from you guys - so feel free to correct me if I say something stupid. Thanks!

Hahaha thanks - glad to be here.

I have big plans for this car. She's going to be a beast when I finish her up. But in the meantime, I am grateful for the help!

Also, a picture.

I've got an '82 Chevy with the CCC that set the same code. I traced the sensor to the back of the speedo, cleaned the pickup and connector and cleared the code.Yours may have picked up some dirt after 30+ years of use.
