VIN Confusion

So I'm in the process of checking the engine VIN on my '70 Cutlass Supreme Conv against the vehicle VIN and I found an odd discrepency, at least odd to me. The engine VIN reads 30E170140 and the vehicle VIN reads 342670E180140. Is it possible the last six digits could be off by one digit and be original?

The odds of being EXACTLY 10,000 units off is greater than winning the lottery. I'm betting someone made a major boo boo stamping the block at the factory.

I agree. Believe it or not, this is not that uncommon. I've heard of several situations like this among other GM cars. Most of the ones I've seen had engine or trans stamping with the LAST digit being off by one number from the vin though which is more questionable than your stamping which HAS to be human error.

My thoughts as well, it was probably human error when it was stamped - I was hoping there was some obscure numbering issue an expert may had heard of. Definately disappointing, but I do love the car so its not all bad.
