Talking Newbie looking for suggestions...

Hello all,

I am the proud new owner of a '71 Cutlass Supreme (Jezabell). I posted the full story on how I came to own her in the intro section if you are interested. Jezabell is in need of a new engine and tranny. I am looking for some suggestions. I am looking to keep my self to a $3-5k budget for right now. Any suggestions you all my have would be greatly appreciated.

Hey. I guess it would depend on the final rusults you are looking for. Cruiser, or strip car. A 350/th350 combo would do nice for a cruiser, a 455/th400 for something more Your budget amount would definitly make a good reliable cruiser driveline. Best of luck on the project. Jim.

Thanks for the reply Jim. I am leaning toward the 455 combo, for the something more. It will all start with finding the right deal I guess. If come across any leads drop me a line. Thanks again...

Talking Looking for advice...

OK guys, I pulled the trigger on a 455/TH400 combo. I am looking to build this combo into a STRONG street set up. I would like to stick to my original budget of 3-5k. I got both pieces of the combo for only $200 so I feel like I am off to a pretty good start. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the suggestion bro. I checked out the site, I do not like the format as much as this forum. I did multiple searches, but could not find the build thread you mentioned. Can you hook me up with a link? Thanks again!

Jeff, realoldspower.com has a sub-forum that is titled something like engine builds or combos or something like that. I don't go over there often but it shouldn't be hard to find as they have less sub-forums than we do. Under it people post their builds titled something like this "My 455 street 400hp under 5k" or "350 12.5 @ 110mph consistently". You could scroll down, highlight a few, and print them off as guidelines. There are a lot of builders over there that are serious into power, hence the forum name. There are a few guys over here with more than enough knowledge but they may not have seen your post. I built my 455, .030 over stock rods, crank, Lunati 498 lift cam, comp roller tip rockers, edelbrock performer with holley carb, cheap forged pistons and fair machine work for about 3.5k. It pulls a heavy '69 Delta with torque to spare. A 350 would be cheaper and a chevy 350, well......never mind.

Oldsguy,

Thank you very much for the info. That link is going to be very useful. I am planning a build very similar to yours. I already picked up the 455 and TH400 for the rebuild and transplant. Did you use the stock heads? What are the "cheap" forged pistons that you used? Thanks again for your help!
