I'm tearing the car down and the rubber on my 1972 has a slit in it.

Are you talking about the rubber boot at the middle of the shaft under the hood?

Inline Tube (on e-Bay) sells those and the clamp as well.

 

I think he's looking for the rag joint. Yes they are sold. You can usually find just the disk at a parts store, but it's a lot easier to just order the complete joint from somewhere like Year One.

Well....since Skryla hasn't come back on this it looks like we have a bet brewing.

My bet is he's talking about the upper bell grease seal...the part that My442 refers to.

Lay down your wagers folks!!!!....I'll bet one of my Gas Tank Pads that this is the part he's referring to. Anyone want to put up some parts, etc in return?? (This isn't going to be a one sided bet so don't interpret it that way).

 

I can't take that bet, because you're probably right.

Of course, we all know that the steering knuckle is the heavy forged thing that connects the upper and lower ball joints and the outer tie rod to the wheel bearings on each side (I believe there may be some cars (ie: front wheel drive) where it is distinct from the spindle, but it's early, and I can't think of any, so I'll say that it's also called the spindle 99% of the time).
Since he referred to "the upper knuckle that connects to the steering column," and said it was "rubber" and "slit," I have to agree that he's talking about the bellows that fits into the "bell" or steering universal joint between the upper steering column segment and the lower steering column segment, about six inches forward of the firewall.

And, sure, you can get one, but the fun part is geting it past the pressed-in pin that engages the steel shoes that ride in the "bell."
