Question Trunk Lid Question

couldn't find anything in old threads so:

My 1970 Cutlass Supreme was rear ended many many years ago. The trunk lid had to be replaced. I know (from pictures of the car in 1970) the replacement lid was not from a 70, it has O L D S M O B I L E across the lid. What year is this lid from? Any tips on finding a 1970 lid?

Without seeing a picture, it's hard to tell, but I'm suspecting it's a 1968-69 lid.

Fusick sells a reproduction trunk lid for your car.

Also, give www.dvap.com a call. They might have something for you.

no I think it is a 71. I have a 71 and it has oldsmobile spelled out across the back. I believe 70-72 are interchangable.

My two 72 have the letters across it. I am not sure if that was the only year for it. trunk lids for 1970-1972 are the same....BUT Supreme lids are different than the "S" lids. So be careful on your search and make 100% sure its for a supreme. What you can do is take a traced drawing of one of the corners close to the rear window. One of them is more straight across (from corner to corner) than the other.

You can always just weld up the holes if you want the original look.

I do not think 68/69 lids will fit on a 70/72

Just did a little more checking. The letters were on 71 and 72.

For 70-72 there are 3 sizes of trunk lids
2 door cutlass s
supreme
conv./4 door
All have repos avail.
Hope this helps

Since you have a vert, and I have a hartop, want to take some measurements to compare said theory?

Doh! Didn't realize the lid a) was on the car, and b) was actually spelled out. I was thinking about the chrome strip on the back. My bad. I really need to finish my car. lol.

Okay, the convertible lid measures:

Width - closest to back window - ~55"
Width - at center of of the curve - ~59"
Length - from edge by rear window to lower edge (trim) measured over the curve - ~33.5"
Length - from edge by rear window to beginning of the curve - ~26"

All measurements approximate...
How about the 2 door models?

You are 100% correct. The lettering came into being on 71/72 on Cutlass Supreme coupes and convertibles. Prior to that there was a long strip of brushed stainless with the Oldsmobile lettering embossed on some models. It continued in a different casting for 1970-72.

Uhhh, No. 1968 and 1969 lids are different entities on their own. And there's no way they'll fit on 1970-72. You are right about Fusicks though. They do sell deck lids for 70-72. Check their newest catalogue on page 22. Trunk lids specified for the S, CS, and vert. BTW the Vert lid is the same one for 4 door Cutlass models. Price: 359.00 + shipping and tax.

You can also get them elsewhere including on ebay. I just happen to have my latest Fusicks catalogue handy.

Arrrghhh there Matey!!! Capn' Rob prepare to be boarded!!!

I also have the 2 door Fastback Cutlass S so I thought I'd jump in on this for fun. Holy slithering snakeskins Batman! Those measurements are REALLY different from mine, so for a 2 door fastback (approx) I'm putting the comarison number after yours to show the difference ok? ...

Deck Lid comparison...Cutlass Supreme (notchback)....vs....Cutlass S (fastback)
Width - closest to back window ...- ~55" vs ~58 1/4"
Width - at center of of the curve - ~59" vs ~62"
Length - from edge by rear window to lower edge (trim) measured over the curve - ~33.5" vs ~32 1/2"
Length - from edge by rear window to beginning of the curve -...............................~26" vs ~23 1/2"

This was an interesting question that was asked. I had wondered about it in the past, but never done anything about it. Way to go Rob!! Ask a good question and raise the bar in a challenge.

Ok so I'm a day late and a buck short on this. My numbers came out differently than the above post, but that could all be because of the actual position of the tape measure OR the accuracy of the tape itself. SO my contribution is side by side visuals...

Cutlass Supreme:

Cutlass "S" or 442 coupe

Side by side from right to left

Side by side left to right
