Need help installing quarter window and window guide.
72 Cutlass S hardtop '87' style (no B pillar)
In the process of checking and cleaning inside the quarter panel, I removed the quarter window glass and window guide. Now, after about 8 hrs of frustrating work, I can't get them reinstalled.
I have the Fisher Body Service Manual for the car - the quarter window install/remove procedure is on page 7-10. It's a pretty weak explanation of the process. See attached photo.
Can anyone give me a hot tip on how to install the quarter glass and guide? There must be some mystical positions for the 2 pieces in order to get them together and installed.
Did you take both sides apart? If not look at the other side.
Clarify exactly where the struggle is... with pics.
Hind site is 20/20...lesson learned... always measure and mark the locations of all fasteners, stops, tracks, sweeps etc.
Take good pictures before disassembly. Look at the original fastener witness marks left from the factory installation. Use them as a guide.
Simultaneous adjustment of both door and quarter glass is necessary to achieve correct operational clearance.
The problem was not that I didn't know where the parts go. I labeled everything I took off and I know where everything goes.
The problem was getting the glass rollers inserted into the window guide with both pieces inside the quarter panel. I checked a few videos on YouTube of people doing the same job and didn't learn anything helpful.
This evening I went out and gave it one more try and was finally able to get the window glass assembled to the window guide. The job would be considerably easier if I had somebody to help me hold the glass while I guided it onto the window guide, but I managed to get it done by myself. Good thing my conversation with myself during the process was not recorded.
The magic secret (which is not revealed in the Fisher Body service manual) seems to be:
(1) Insert the window guide into the cavity. Do NOT attach the window guide first, just leave it loose in the cavity. Then
(2) Insert the lower edge of the glass down into the cavity and have a helper hold it in the up position, then
(3) grope around for a couple hours until you can get the the 3 glass rollers onto the guide.
(4) After the 2 pieces are mated, you can mount the guide to the inner panel with its mounting screws.
(5) Last, install the window regulator roller into the window sash channel and bolt that roller onto the regulator arm.
(6) Align the glass using another nebulous procedure in the Fisher manual.
In my case I had installed the window regulator before trying to install the window and guide. But it MAY be possible to install the window regulator AFTER the glass and guide are installed. I'm not doing any further experimentation to find out.
It's very easy (if theory). In reality, not so much.
This post can be closed now.. Hopefully others will find my little process useful
Ahhh yes patience trial and error. Score! you won. OldsCut< less 1, Olds Cutlass 0.
Would have loved to see the factory workers do this in seconds. Bunch of other things Id like to see done in seconds.
Yes, I'm sure the factory workers could do this in less than a minute after they practiced a few times.
Today, I removed the other quarter window and the guide. I cleaned everything and applied new grease as necessary. I then reinstalled the glass and guide in about 10 minutes. Apparently I learned my lesson on the first quarter window.
Now I have my own procedure tor removing and installing the quarter windows and window guides. Most likely I'll never have to use them again.
