455 build

Just finished a 455 for a local guy. 451hp, 508tq. I'll post dyno pull and sheet when I can get it to attach.

234/240 on a 108, in at 106, Erson Hyd roller, .568/.580 lift.
Crane Gold 1.6 Rockers
10.3:1
HV pump
7qt Moroso pan
1 7/8 Hooker headers
32 deg timing, 600rpm/sec pulls, we left a few hp/tq on the table. You'll get higher hp/tq numbers if you do 300rpm/sec pulls. Plus the timing was a bit conservative.

Made a little less power/torque than Panos', his was 465/524. But this one made peak tq at 4300, peak hp at 5400. Panos' made peak tq at 4100, hp at 5100.
The reason I'm mentioning Panos' is because this is a good comparison. Panos was 10.8:1, stock iron C heads, stock Performer, but a bigger cam, 238/246 on a 110. In theory Panos' should have made more power higher up than this one due to the longer duration cam with a wider lobe sep, but it didn't, hmmmm.

My guess is that the larger carb (870 vs 830), Torker intake and larger headers on this application brought the peak tq/hp range higher even though it had a smaller cam than Panos'.
Bottom line? I think both would benefit from the new RPM if it ever becomes available. And I figure the Edlebrock heads allowed this combination to have less compression and a smaller cam but still make about the same power as compared to stock iron heads.

Sorry guys but it looks like my next one is a solid roller 434 SBC. Looking for 550-600 on that one.

Here is my first attempt at making a video. The engine that Mark is referring to, he built for me. I'm happy with the result and it should make a nice street motor for my '72 Cutlass Supreme.

Does anyone know how much taller is the RPM air-gap manifold than the regular 455 performer??? I'm hearing 7'' and it is worth the swap..if I can get it under my hood,so I hear.I want to put it on a 455 60 over,10.3:1 with roller motor, cam is 538 lift and 236/244 duration @50.Head are Mondello's so I don't know too much about em except there at least as good as Eddy's untouched,I hope.Headers are 1 3/4 into 3'' collectors,2'' exhaust and 2 chamber flowmasters.

Long Block was little over 7g's, again Olds bottom with 8Qt pan, restrictors,studs and straps,F Block,roller motor with Aluminum Heads with a little work,and hardened seats,bronze guides.

Your application could use more lift and a 2.5" exhaust system. Otherwise it sounds good.
The RPM is .60 of an inch taller than a standard Performer, the Victor is over an inch taller than the RPM. I think the Torker is about the same as the standard Performer, maybe a little taller.
The aluminum heads should have already had good seats and bronze guides, did you have to add that?

Just an FYI, it's .060 over not .60 and the cam specs are done at .050, not .50.

Good info.

I got 415 HP and 520 TQ with a 226/230 cam, ported G heads, O4B intake, W/Z manifolds, roller tip rockers, and lots of tuning.

9.7 to 1 compression.

Runs on 93 pump gas, and stays at 180 degress.

Good street engine with 3.91 gears.

About 5K to build it (parts and labor)

BTR quoted me $12.5k for 500 HP.

Seats and guides did come with the heads.The RPM manifold might just make it if it's .060 of an inch taller.It would be going in a 69 442 with the stock hood.I would liked to have seen 575 lift and maybe split the intake and exhaust on the lift.My mistake exhaust system is 2.5''Gotta try to remember were to put the decimal points and zeros,damn it did I spell decimal correct....cutlassfi I always read your post you give good info,there are alot of others here that sound like they know their stuff also.About my build,I've seen other builds on this site that use cams as small as the one I'm using,but with a different manifold,more stall speed,and maybe a little more carb,but not always and they run well into the 12's.I... like so many others want a well mannered 12 second streeter.Gotta break it in then we'll head to Atco...with my specs I think I might see 12.8 @ 106.

My442....at 5k I think you did great.Love a streeter that uses pump gas,stays at 180,and is making over 400 hp with gobs of torque.Do you use a stat or a restrictor to keep it at 180.
