what 455 and trans do I have
I read another thread on this, but I didnt want to hijack his thread. It did help alot, but I have a few other questions about what I have. My block number up front "396021 F". the heads are cast with a big "E" in the corner, the back of the block has "72 CFO" (the O could be something else) and on the trans: near the tailshaft "3-70 q" or a "b", not sure there either. and on the tag it reads "70-OC 87112" im planning on stuffin this thing in my 64 cutlass convertible. any other input or info from others who have done the same is quite welcome!

trans is 1970.
The year of the block will be on the driver's side below the #1 spark plug on a flat pad sticking out.

K, I wrote down what was on the little pad below the #1 and it is stamped "30X141685" I know the "3" is the olds the "0" is for 1970, but what is the "X" for? and from my first post, what transmission do I have? I dont know how to tell.

As all have said before we need pic's. With the 455, all info points to be a '70 engine. I'm thinking the trans is a short shaft from '70 also. May be the matching trans to the engine. Should be a nice mover.

The 1970 OC TH-400 was used on 455 2-barrel Delta 88, Custom, Royale models (5400-6600 series). Should be a long tail shaft.

455 C heads
So I have a chance to get a 455 with C heads. Is that worth getting rather than this one I have been asking about with E heads? the one with C heads the guy wants 200 more for than the one I have been looking at with the E heads

the C heads motor has the 4 barrel and the E heads have the two barrel. The C heads come from a 69 block and the E heads are off a 70 block. I bought both of them as the price was good. should I mix the two with sertain parts? and someone said something about a switch pitch trans on the 1969 engine. I have never heard of that. what the heck is "switch the pitch" ???

A switch pitch trans means the torque converter stall speed can be changed between two preset RPMs. A typical stock switch pitch stall RPM would be 1300 in the low stall mode and 2200 in high stall. It's like having a high stall converter to launch harder due to the torque mulitiplication but then having a low stall converter for minimum slip at higher speeds. So you'd have two converters in one basically.
If you're using that 1970 trans you don't have a switch pitch. They were made from about 1964 1/2 to 1967.

the '70 trans isnt the one I was told might be one, I have a 69 motor that they said it might. It has a longer tail shaft, but I wouldnt know what to look for. I dont know if this one came with the motor or not.

C heads are pretty good that is what edelbrock bases their head design off of however the E heads are better. Without my book idk because I really only know the small blocks right off the top of my head
