Thinking of changing cam, looking for advice

Thinking of changing my cam not sure what ii should go with.455 has 10.5.1 with eldelbrock heads and rollers.Installing a new 200r4 and just did the rear with new 355 gears.750 eldelbrock carb.Mainly a street car like a a little rumble but want to drive it.Not sure what i have in now its great torque cam pretty good idle.I have a couple of lifters i think going south so i figure maybe i will do a swap while i have it apart.

First off, make sure you know why it took out a couple of lifters. You may then want to drop the pan and do a visual inspection, pump, sediment at the bottom of the pan etc., maybe even pop off a cap or two.

If all is good then a something in the 225-230@.050 would be a good place to start. You want something with .550 lift or better to make best use of those heads. I offer a 228/236@.050 cam that a few on here have used on the Edelbrock headed 455's, worked well.

Have you thought about going roller?

Obviously you know, an engine is a package, with cam choice being part of it. You might be interested in what I did to my 455. Although no roller, cam is .535/.560 lift with 238/248@0.50" duration, with lobe center moved from 110 to 114 for better street idle. Crane Hi Intentsity lifters with MSD ignition. Idle isn't bad, although not stock smooth, with stellar throttle response with tuned Q-Jet. Dave Smith SS heads and TRW forged pistons. Would do the build again.

Motor might have 5000 miles on it,oil pressure appears good, nothing in oil pan that i could see. When i cahnged the heads and rockers cam looked good but i noticed i could push the lifters down fairly easy was hoping just a poor set of lifters, like i said i cant remember what was put in for cam and lifters, built the motor almost 20 years ago and has sat for 13 to 14 years only started to move it once in a while.I guess i could try a mechanical oil pressure guage first see what the oil pressure is.Yes i was thinking maybe a roller cam.I just bought a new tranny so have to see where i am at.
