461 engine break in???
So in the next few days here I should be ready to fire up the new 461 and hope to do it right!!
I have bought some Lucas zinc-plus engine break-in additive and I also have the comp cam oil break-in additive....can I add both the same time or is this a no..no or is it just a waste....should I just add one or the other???
Also I have 5 litres of quaker state 10-30 oil...will this be a good oil to use with the additive on break in??
The engone builder recomended I use a ROTELLA-T 5W40, because it has a higher level of zinc.....any truth to this.....and is it recomended??

The Rotella has reduced their zinc levels to comply with the new diesel regs from what I understand. IMO,the cam breakin additive probably has enough zddp in it to do the job. Use the Lucas on your next oil change.

Scooter dont use anything thinner than 20w40 or staight 30 wt and you can add both of those oil additives, Oldsmobiles dont like thin oil on break in!! and OLDs Cutlass is right use one for the initial break in and the other after you change the oil. The reason for not using thin oil is the heat produced during break in really thins the oil out and you can get some galling if the oil temp is too high. You can go to a thinner oil after break in but I would stick to a heavier wt oil for the first 2000 miles then go thinner once you have all the break in behind you.

And ditto on the Rotella it doesnt have enough zinc like it used to and not enough for using on your car remember Quaker state doesnt have any either. I would use only a true racing oil as they are the only ones other than specialty oils that have enough zinc and other elements that are needed for flat tappet cams and our OLd Olds engines! Its easy to get Valvoline or Kendall racings oils at your local parts store otherwise you usually have to order the specialty oils.

Most cam manufacturers now recommend regular 10W-30 with a good break in additive like you have. Go for it.
