455 pulley confusion

Ok after reading on here about pulley/water pump confusion i started getting worried that I might not have the right parts for my 455 swap. removed 350 no ac, kept power stering pump and alternator with brackets from 350, using water pump from 70 model 455 out of 88 ac car (e413307 Y D2 5 ) 3 groove pulley 399404 KF , crank pulley also 3 groove 399405 KC . Tonight I prematurely semi-mounted the alternator and it appears it will be ok on the rear groove of the water pump and crank pulley, question is will the power sterring pump work pulley KG ? will it be on the middle groove and the outer groove will not be used. Im running the motor in a stand prior to installing so I wont know about the power steering pump until i install in car.

Any advise or comments. Thanks in advance

If you're worried that all 3 grooves need to be used to balance things out the answer is no. The most important thing is for the pulleys and belts to line up so they have straight runs.

balance

not worried about balance, worried that power steering wont work, it appears that the alternator will work but not 100 percent until everything is complete.

the 455 w/ac had alternator on driver side my 350 non ac had alt on passenger side so thats why i reused it. i will head back out to shop and get pulley info.

I think your best bet would be to use everything from the 350. So you will likely need to change the water pump as the 455 AC water pump will be longer than non-AC pump, distance from timing cover toward the radiator. Then use the 350 water pump pully and crank shaft pully. Either that or change the power steering pump pully to match the 455 pullys. The only way to be sure is to keep everything matched. There are some combinations that are only half a belt width off, not obvious to see but it will eat up the belt. Make sure you keep track of all the spacers for the power steering pump or that will cause the pully to be crooked too. John

350 is gone

I sold the 350 to another classic olds forum user. so thats not an option. so i should buy a new water pump ??? which one should i buy, if the water pump is different then the crank pulley has to be changed, to match the water pump. I moved alt bracket from top hole to bottom hole and its bracket bolted on fine but may not line up perfect to early to tell. sounds like I have a mess now. nothing simple. is there a place to look up water pump numbers and find neck length. i would think everything would have to reference from crank dampner pulley.

If you don't have the 350 water pump, water pump pulley and crank pulley than the easiest thing might be to change the power steering pump pulley to match the 455 pulleys. Can you post the codes from the crank and water pump pulleys? there should be a two letter code and maybe a several digit number code. John

Look 6-1 (page 90) and 6-1 (page 91) in the assembly manual (72) for pulley and belt specs. For 455s:
PS pulley KG is not used with 399405 3 groove.
The belt specs for the standard pulley requires a PS belt (code KM).
The specs for the smaller 3 groove pulley requires use of belt (code LQ)
Don't know what the sizing is.

It looks like I'm trying to figure this out from a 72 model year, and you have a 69? The principles should be the same, only the part numbers may be different. I have 2 pages of info on the 72 350/455 belts/pulleys. You should be able to get that also out of a 69 AM unless I'm mistaken.

If in doubt, do as John suggested and just swap everything straight across.

In my experience the power steering pulley in a non factor. My gut tells me that you should be able to use the 455 crank and WP pulleys with no issues. I'd even gather that you could use the 455 WP pulley with the 350 crank pulley and the belts would line up. The only issue would be diameter. They might be different and could interfere with each other and cause some funky belt lengths.

Don't pannick.I think what you have will work. When you get a chance, give me a call, and if you need a piece,I'll meet up with you somewhere.Just make sure when you mount the power steering pump, you have the spacer in the front, and the other one on the lower side of the block.I have done exactly what you are trying to do,so if you don't have the pieces now,I can figure out what you do need, based on what is not correct.

Use KF water
KC crank
KH steering
and a 5.6" pump.

All will be well.
