Interior upholstery kit quality

A freind of mine wants to redo his interior on a 70 ragtop and I am pushing him toward Legendary but he seems interested in a cheaper priced PUI kit from OPG. What do some of you other guys think of the quality comparison ??

I have used PUI, and they are not bad, I used them on a 70, what I did't like about them, was the covers were to shiny. Also the bead that the rings hook on to when not on them, had to use you old. I saw the Legendary when they first came out at a Olds nat meet. They look great. My son just bought , a complete interior set for his 70 Chevelle. They are great, haven't installed them yet, but they look good. Also the door panals come complete, and with metal top rails. Also have the cord installed to hook the hog rings. They are by far worth the extra money. Also I bought them for him when the were on 20 per cent discount. Their people also were great to deal with.

I used Pui but I have heard that Legendary are better.
Pui are good but real tough to get seat covers tight. Probably because I did not install new seat foam and I had never done it before. but they turned out fine.
door panels are fine.

When I saw the pictures in the thread pasted below of the two manufacturers' 66 GTO seat covers, it made it easy for me to decide which brand I will be buying for my 72 442.

I used Legendary in my car and I have not used PUI so I can't give you a real comparison. What I can tell you is the Legendary upholstery and door panels are great. The quality is top notch. Fit/finish is perfect. I installed everything myself and it all went together nicely, the 1st upholstery job I have ever done.

The other thing great about Legendary is their customer service. When you order, you talk to an informed human. If you have problems or questions you call them and to talk to the same informed person. They shorted me a piece of fabric for my center armrest, I called, in two days I had the piece to finish my front seat.

For me the extra $$ were worth it. I get compliments on the interior all the time.

I think they are running a sale right now too.

Legendary if perfect fit, show quality, and exact color is desired.
For a driver, either would be fine.
Yes Legendary is a little more $, but if the car is sold, you could easily get back the difference.
Order direct through Legendary to take advantage of their frequent sales and or free shipping deals. Cost then could be almost equal to that PUI.

Question PUI Interiors

I live 3 miles from the PUI Factory. They just moved to the location earlier this year. Has anyone had any dealing with them this year?
I inspected the factory (Fire Prevention and Pre-planning, I am a Fire Fighter.) It was cool to see how it was all made but the product is the important part. They did not seem to have a huge amount of finished inventory around but have the ability to produce what is needed on demand very quickly.
I wonder if they have gotten any better with all the investment they put into the new facility?

Thanks,

Brian

I have just had PUI seat covers fitted in my W30 and I couldn't be happier with them.
The upholsterer that fitted them said they were very good quality and the fit and finish was just right.
They have that nice original look about them, the color is a good match with my original door panels and they are not too shiny.

PUI Interior

I recovered my front buckets in my 70 W-30 with PUI covers. The first thing I noticed is that the pattern was not deep as the original covers, but they looked good for a year or so. Now the pattern has flattened quite a bit and they do not look lik the original rear seat covers. If I was to do it again, I would lean towards Legendary.

Just my 2 cents.

I just did the interior on the 72 clone, PUI, bought through Fusick, and had to send the door panels back 3 times. They still weren't right, but decided to just make it work.

One problem I had was the holes for the window cranks weren't even close, especially in the rear. Another was the inserts' wood laminate was wrinkled, peeling, and wavy (still are).

Plastic on the top of the front panels are flimsy, the holes for the push-in retainers were way off, and the beading was cheap looking.

Seat covers (I've done many) were just ok, some uneven stitching, had a couple of button caps pop off (glued them back), foam used was not enough to give it the correct shape, and the material itself was thinner (had one tear to repair while stretching).

Headliner, I'm not even going there, let's just say if you plan on doing it yourself, and you haven't done many, have someone else do it. If you do take a shot at it, buy the Legendary one and do your homework. (And don't cry if you have to buy another and try again.).

Overall, yes, as a driver, it's 'good', but if you want it to last, and look great, spend the extra.

My 2 cents.

I bought the PUI interior. My trim guy would not even use the PUI seat covers. He said it wasn't worth the time. So I don't have a good opinion for that one. The door panels were installed and have sat in my garage on the car for the last five years while I built my house. I have watches them wrinkle up faster than I have which is the only redeeming value imo.

Update

OK, now I have had some experience with PUI upholstery.

My father in law picked up an '86 Monte Carlo SS. Good shape but needed a little work to make it a nice car. Since I did the work on the Cutlass I was drafted to work on the SS.

Legendary does not offer the covers for the SS, so on a vendors recommendation I went PUI. Well, when I got around to putting them on, the 1st seat bottom was a pain and it looked awful. After screwing with it for hours I figured out that the bottom had been sewn in backwards and nothing was going to line up and pull snug. I called the vendor, sent pics, called the vendor again, talked some more, called the vendor again, and a few days later a new set of covers arrived.

The new covers look OK and they will pass. The fit, fabric and sewing quality has much to be desired. There is no comparison in the quality between Legendary and PUI upholstery. No doubt I would spend the money again on Legendary because I know I would get great service and an exceptionally good product.

I still holds true. You get what you pay for...

#1. You can't stick new upholstery on 40 year old compressed and deteriorated foam and expect it to be tight.
(Kinda like expecting breasts to be as full at the age of 50 in the same bra they wore in their early 20's)
#2. Having an upholstery shop is worth the $$$.

I am extremely happy with my new PUI upholstery and all new foams I got from Tamraz on Ebay.
I paid ~$350 for a full front and rear set for a 1970 Cutlass in 2009. It was listed for $385.
Foams were $100 a seat IIRC. They are the cheapest retailer for PUI and they are local to me
around Chicago. I've heard Legendary is the best, but you pay nearly 2x as much for it.
$320 just for the front bucket covers on Ebay

I did my rear bench, and my passenger front BOTTOM bucket myself with a hog ring kit.
The rest I had done by an interior shop. Visually, they look the same.
However, spring repairs and support I didn't do in the passenger and its'
VERY VERY noticeable even with new foams. You don't know what you're
missing if you do it yourself. Spring repairs and re-padded support are desirable IMO.

My rear bench in this pic still had some creases that didn't come out yet because it was freshly installed.
But I also put a 1" layer of foam on top of the existing padding to beef it up since I couldn't find replacement factory stuff.
The nnly flaw in the install was they forgot to pull in the bolster seams. Not a big deal tho.

Your covers turned out nice! one of the previous owners of my car installed the wrong pattern seat covers in the front(not 1970) and my rear is the original so it looks funky. I've been kicking PUI and legendary back and forth for quite some time.

When I had my 70 W31 post coupe,I had a set of those green 70 covers from PUI,and I sent them back. They are not the correct shade of green.I also had a set of PUI covers for 70 blue, and they weren't right shade either.I have put legendary on everything I own,and will continue to do so.If I do a customer's car,I tell them if they want me to do it,that is the company that I am using.I am especially happy with my dark saddle covers & panels for my 72 Supreme. The colors actually has a two-tone in it,which is what I found on my originals. It's two different colors combined, like a fleck or something.
When recovering seats, and using new foam, you need to trim the foam,no matter what brand it is.Making it look like an inflated pillow is wrong, and it won't be good for the covers either.

I'm all about saving a buck whenever i can, Got the set from PUI, installed it myself. Perhaps i should post pictures of the process, took alot of elbow grease and i completely replaced the foam with the same foam i used to do the upholstery on my boat.

The ledgendary covers are most definitely better.
You can even tell the difference in the weight of the vinyl if you were holding a PUI or Distinctive cover in one hadn and the legendary in the other.

as shown in those photos, the biggest issue PUI has is with their "heat pressed" patterns. They really suck. The others which are all stiched are not bad- most are actually pretty decent, but any with lots of ribs usually are lacking in "puffy-ness" that the factory had.

As for the cardboard bolster sleeves being empty- I've had hit and miss luck using them when they were included (they used to always be included). The "Miss" was even when they were there you might still get noticeable tucks showing where each hogring was.

The solution- I remove it(if its there) and insert a peice of wire in the sleeve. Holds the cover tight w/ no tuck marks for each hogring.

For the difference in the price, it's not even worth having the conversation in my opinion.

Legendary currently going in my 72 442 vert. I have a full legendary interior in my 72 Chevelle SS 454 Vert as well.

Legendary quality IS worth the money.

I bought my bucket seat covers and rear bench covers from Fusick and they deal with PUI. I recovered my seats this summer and it fit perfectly. I did it under the sun so scretching the cover over the new seat foams (bought from USA Parts Supply) and springs (bought from The Parts Place) didnt give me a hard time.
