what mirrors came on a 70 442. also were they on both sides or just the drivers side. mine is only on the drivers side and i didnt get a mirror with the car.
any help would be helpful

It could have been either a chrome non-remote just drivers or both sides, a chrome with remote on the drivers side, or the painted sport mirrors for both sides. The 1970 was a one year only design for the painted sport mirrors, they're kinda shaped like a claim shell vs the bullet style of the 1971 and newer. I've been told but not personally verified that the first year Chevy Vega had the same painted sport mirror as the 1970 Cutlass/442. They are scarce and don't go cheap when you find a set. John

 

how hard is it to add the pass side mirror and are the patterns in the door the same for both mirrors?

 

No remote control for the mirror on passenger side door panel. On a '70 442 the drivers side is remote controled and the passengers side is manual adjustment only.

 

When I put my sport mirrors on I just traced the pattern from the drivers door on a piece of paper and transferred it to the passenger door. That put the mirror in the correct location.

Is it common for the passenger-side mirror to be frozen? Mine won't move, and I don't dare force it lest it break. Any suggestions on how to free it up?

 

The first year Vega mirror is not the same as the 70 442 sport mirrors.

 

Brian, I checked mine last night and it was not frozen.

I looked at it for a while and could not figure out how to lube the mirror pivot, but maybe after the mirror is off the car this pivot could be accessed?

 

I've been restoring a set of 1970 clam shell mirrors and the passenger side mirror is adjustable (as previously mentioned). The mounting brace has 3 stems leading into the mirror. The middle stem is actually part of a ball joint (see 2nd pic). Lubricating this area would pretty much require taking the housing apart, unless someone has an ingenious way to accomplish this.

If the mirror is totally frozen and/or the mirror is scratched, you can get a replacement from The Parts Place ($59 - expensive).

Incidently, by "housing" I meant the shell and base.

Upon further thought it is possible to remove the mirror from the housing by unscrewing one bolt (the one nearest the front of the mirror). This would still require getting inside the door panel, though, and that is a pain in the butt.
