SSI lug hole / taper size?
SSI lug hole / taper size?
I have a 69 cutlass and deciding on what wheels I like on it, so I mounted some 14" chrome SSII's with some vintage tires on one side, and SSI's on the other. Funny thing, the SSI's have a really large bolt (lug) hole and my lugnuts are almost falling through ? The SSII's look like they are sitting right? THe lugs are aftermarket, do the older wheels have a different taper ?
and no, they were not run loose, I know what that looks like on a rim.
can't upload pics, just got new camera and its not used to me yet.

Sometimes, over the course of many years of tightening and loosening, the stud holes on the wheels will become enlarged. The typical, 7/16'' stud, 3/4" o.d. lug nut had/has a 60 degree taper. Some of the newer "bulge seat" lug nuts will have a slightly larger seating area on them and may work better. I am not aware of any wheels that were manufactured with a larger stud hole.
wow, i was afraid of that, the holes are perfectly rounds, just "larger", the wheel taper at its top is near the hex of the chrome lug. on the ssII's its in the middle of the lug taper. Thanks for the reply !!
I raised this topic a few years ago. Here's the thread: https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...bulletins.html
Bottom line: I went with lugnuts with a wider seat.

AWESOME ! I knew something just did not look right. If only I could have loaded my pictures, they would have been exactly like yours ! Larger lugs was the solution I was going to go with as well, but its nice that to know that I'm not seeing things or being "picky" I have to say these forums really work !!
