'89 Olds "clunks" when put in gear

A friend on mine has 1989 Olds Delta 88. When he puts it in gear, it "clunks" or kind of jumps. The fluid is fine. I tried a search for this but ti didn't work. Thanks in advance.

An '89 88 doesn't have u-joints.

This car has a 440-T4 transmission. Back when they were new, they had an almost 100% failure rate. Harsh engagement was just one of their problems. I'd say it's the nature of the beast.

Thanks guys. I thought it might be a u-joint but I don't know anything about transmissions. So, is it on the inside of the transmission or outside by the driveshaft?

It doesn't have u-joints. It has constant velocity joints. There are inner joints and outer joints. They are located inside the boots on the front axle shafts.
