gear shifting probs slim jim
hi again,
yesterday i changed the front "O-ring" at my -62 rotohydramatic transmission, now when i drive the slimjim it will not shift gears as it should. ex: it doesent shift down at all, goes from first gear to 4 really bad does anywone know how the kickdown mechanical throttle valve linkage should be adjusted? last week i drove without the kickdown-linkage and the transmission runned correct, is it bad to drive without kickdown? and finally does anywone knows how much oil i need in a 62 slim-jim in litres please? |

A Slim Jim transmission will need 5.5 quarts (5.2 liters) of ATF if you drained the transmission. It will need 6.5 quarts (6.2 liters) of ATF if you dropped the transmission pan.
Unfortunately, there are a number of adjustments that need to be done to the Slim Jim to get it to shif correctly. I have an Oldsmobile service manual for 1964 and it goes over those adjustments with illustrations (the illustrations are needed to make it clear). I am wondering if this is something Joe or I should post to the transmissions forum... Oldsguy would be able to sticky it. We get questions about the Slim Jim at least once a month.

Oh boy- sounds like quite a mess. The transmission was working before you changed the seal? If it was OK before & now it isn't I'd take a close look at whatever was "fixed."
Those front seals on Slim Jims all leak, but if you're losing quarts of fluid in just a few miles something is seriously amiss. Are you sure you have the correct replacement seal? Perhaps the seal was damaged on installation. Do you have a service manual? Read the transmission section closely. These are strange beasts that do strange & frustrating things to the uninitiated.... The best thing to do with a Slim Jim that sort of works OK is to slowly back away & leave it alone. Good Luck! Chuck Last edited by Starfire61 : 04-15-2008 at 04:38 PM. |

Bummer! Definitely check out the front seal you put in. You might also want to check out this website. They are a good supplier for older Transmission parts.
