63 slim jim shift prob?

Its in a 63 98 that sat for a while..Goes into gear firm and holds rev and first strong. No shift to second gear..If you wind up first a bit and let off the gas, there is no engine braking unless you run it with the lever actually in first, then it will engine brake. Is it shot or something Im not aware of..This is my first olds restore..I am tranny savey but mostly old mopars and later GM trannies..I will rebuild if needed, but dont wanna..lol..

A Slim Jim works off much the same principles as a TorqueFlite. It uses a TV rod to determine shift points according to throttle position. TV rod adjustment is critical for them to work right. Even when a SJ is working right, it will still feel weird compared to most other transmissions you're probably used to.

Make sure the fluid is at the proper level. These transmissions are very sensitive to fluid level. Use Dexron in it.

bands

Do you know if this has a band adjustment?.Fluid is correct and tv rod is correct, still no shift. The more I run this car,the better everything gets to working. The tranny also makes a buzzing sound when cold and in park.Any idea what that may be?

Mine makes that buzzing sound, too. That's how I know it working good! I changed the valve body and filter, and didn't get the filter seated properly - no buzzing. Also, no drive...

If you do a search on our website for Slim Jims you will find alot of information. IMHO they are POS transmissions. My 64 98 has one and it has never run properly. Even after I tore into it with the help of an expreienced transmission expert. I would suggest having it rebuilt by someone like Fatsco or just replace it with a better transmission.
