to flush transmission or not to flush?
Hi everyone
I have a 68 cutlass s that I picked up a little while ago. The car has been sitting for about 7 years. It has been started and moved up and down the drive way but no further. I wondering if I should have the tranny flushed in the spring and have the gasket and filter changed? I've heard several opinions. One no because this will loosen up any deposits and possibly cause damage. Second similarly the new oil will cause the same thing to happen. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks ![]() |

Well with a new filter, those deposits will break loose, and get stuck into the new filter, I would recommend it, because the fluid starts to break down. and if the filter is clogged, every time your run it, your running dirty fluid through the transmission, over time that will cause more damage than anything.

I would have to agree with the Jeremiah. I have heard this ridiculous theory before that it is better to NOT change really old engine oil or transmission fluid. That is a rubbish idea! Old oil/fluid is bad. New oil/fluid is good.

Hi everyone
Thanks I thought the same thing. That oil's been sitting for probably 39 years. I can't see that being good. cola |

That is a very bad thing. Even if flushing out the old fluid causes debris to break loose it wouldn't harm that transmission. I have never heard of a TH 350 or TH 400 failing from old age. Towing, racing, bad / no fluid, or overheating but not old age.

You wouldn't believe the awful chunks of garbage that I've pulled out of my pan. Change your fluid often, mine always has crap dropping out of it, but always keeps on going

Mine feels like it's slipping for a while, after every time that I change fluid.
I always put the lucas additive in a few days later once it's used to the new blood, and then it drives just fine for another 30,000 miles.
