Th400 tailshafts

Ok I want to get this straightened out.
1.-There is a short shaft, a medium shaft and a long shaft, correct?
2-shortys are in A bodys like a 71 cutlass??
3-Mediums are in 70's delta 88s?
4.-and the real long ones are in Chubby suburbans and stuff like that?

5.-Is it 4'', 8'' and 12'' or what? I'm kinda confused here.
6-Or are there only 2... long and short?


7.-Is there a medium 375 or something?

I would think the longest ones would be the best, because there is less driveshaft to transfer power through, or twist.
However the longer ones that I have seen
go for cheaper.

I myself have only had to deal with th350s, always with 4 '' tailshafts.

TH350 come in two tailshaft lengths.

400's have 4", 9" and 13" tail shafts, don't know for sure which is in what, but I'm pretty sure most chevys came with 4" shafts

I clipped this from a web site a long time ago. Not sure where (possibly TCI) but many transmission sites have detailed info on trans sizes.


A - overall length
B - Length from bell housing face (surface that mounts to engine) to tail (A-B=Tail shaft length)
C - Length from bell housing face to trans mount
D - Distance between trans mount bolts
E - Bell housing width

without a spreadsheet program it is hard to do, don't worry.

it was very random

every 80s truck i have ever parted with the 400 trans in it was always the short tail

overal trans length including the output yoke(bolt on style) is always the same 31.5" as the 9" tail th350

its crazy like that

the old long tail th400 were way long time ago in the big cars

not common at all anymore

this goes for regular 3L80/th400 only and only 4x2 version


not for the 3L80HD or any other 400 variants


4x4 was a whole different tailshaft than 4x2
the 3L80HD started in 87 and up in the trucks and was 34.5" long overall
and had the 27 spline output like a th350 and 700r4 and so on

tag code LJA and HD cast on the case at the bellhousing top side

i own one and have seen two so far

it is complicated

i have found that the charts and info online that show lengths of GM trannies that are often 1" incorrect

i dont know why

when you put a tape measure on the actual trannies and measure them they are actually 1" longer than stated online

375 and 375B were combinations of the th350 and the th400,
one was a 400 case and the other was a 350 case

uhmmm... th350 were 3, 6, 9, and 12" tails

so..

3" were in 4x4

12" were in some late 70s wagons

6" were in 69-72 trucks and in most cars

9" were in all 73-up trucks

always with 6 inch tailshafts. My bad. I was just eyeballin' them

My th400 is a 9'' I just measured that one too.
